Probably the rarest of all British electronic music productions, Tristram Cary's ill-starred two disc set Trios For Synthi VCS3 Synthesiser and Turntables, privately pressed for Electronic Music Studio (London) Ltd, Putney in 1971.  If you're into UK electronica you will have heard the tragic tale of how Cary and his pals at EMS dreamed up this project as a limited edition of 250, brought them back from the pressing plant and left them by a radiator.  Allegedly somewhere between 30 and 50 copies escaped being warped.  This is one of the escapees.  If you have a VCS3 and access to a pair of Technics, I can see you having much fun with these.

It must be said that the packaging is very flimsy, being of thin card with a rather wide 'spine' (a simple double fold in the single ply outer cover).  Attached to the interior are two 'top-loading' pockets for the records, one on each side.  On the left hand side is a photograph featuring Cary and his family involved in a performance of Trios.  Attached to the right-hand pocket is a further folded card pocket to house the 'scores', a spiral-bound booklet containing 23 printed sheets.  These comprise 6 pages of instructions and a further 17 of directions for 16 live events. 

The outer cover is glazed and while it has had some tiny wear to the tips, and is in remarkably good shape considering how vulnerable it is.  The card is thinner than that of a cereal box and the whole thing is not as well made as a cereal box. The only actual ‘damage’ is wear and two tiny tears to the top of the 'spine' and a little wear to the bottom of the ‘spine’, no losses.  There are no creases or folds to the front and back panels.  The photos will show you everything you want to know.  I can happily grade the 'jacket' as EX, about as good as this construction can ever hope to be.   The interior is clean.  The 'score' is immaculate.  The records are both NM, clean and unmarked.  They are both FLAT.  You may notice some intermittent low level surface noise just at the beginning of one disc, depending on your playback, but we are talking legendary British electronica artefact here, not Decca style audiophile pressing.

I try to avoid using the word 'rare', but I will have to use it here.  Needless to say, it will be very carefully and securely packed.

Regular clients will know that I usually keep my descriptions brief and to the point.  This set demanded a bit more.   Used records play-checked on SME 15, SME V with VDH cart and cleaned when necessary on a Loricraft Pro II.

GRADINGS:

MINT (M): Brand new and unplayed. Perfect, no indications of being handled or played. I only use this grading if I know for sure the record has not been played.

NEAR MINT (NM): The record is virtually flawless, clean and shiny.  Very minor, barely visible innerbag wear may be permitted, but no scratches. The disc should play with no audible noise. Jacket is as close to perfect.

EXCELLENT (EX): Record plays near perfectly, but may have minor paper scuffs that do not interfere with the sound quality. There can possibly be a non-sounding mark or two but nothing that affects play. Record is clean and shiny.  Any issues with the jacket will be minor and described.

Because I have never collected records that are a lower grade than EX, you won't be finding any for sale here.
