                     The Kingsmen

           Featuring LOUIE LOUIE

\                                                        USA - WAND Records - 657 - Stereo

ORIGINAL 1964 first pressing in delightful stereo ...in original factory shrink wrap! The Northwest garage band had a monster hit on their hands with LOUIE LOUIE, a garage punk staple performed by countless of hopeful garage and beatrock bands in every corner of the universe...but the Kingsmen had the winning formula....Recorded for 36 dollars on a Saturday morning on April 6, 1963, The Kingsmen’s version was recorded in one take, and a close listen to it will reveal several mistakes made by the band during that recording, but that just adds to its charm. The Kingsmen turned the laid-back original into a foot-stomping romp with a deliberately slurred vocal delivery. However, owing to claims of obscenity in the lyrics, based on a totally unfounded claim that the slurred lyrics masked this, the song was banned in many places and was actually investigated by the FBI. Seriously, have people nothing better to do. Little did anyone know at the time that The Kingsmen version of "Louie Louie" would become a rock classic.  The song has an almost punk/garage atmosphere to it with the way it was recorded and how inexpensive it was to do, but what is present is incredible.  The guitar break is still epic to this day, and the errors made in the song only add to the fun.  There have been over a thousand covers of "Louie Louie", but the The Kingsmen's still has to be the definitive one.  OK LET'S GIVE TO 'EM RIGHT NOW !   The Kingsmen recorded a number of songs in the studio and audiance reaction was added afterwards. What we have are good raw tracks that represent one of the mid-1960's frat rock, party bands well. "Louie Louie" is an all time classic. The rest of the tracks give a wonderful picture of an era long gone. Still a great listen and is still pretty cool -- very gritty for 1964.
