Label Conditions: Both in superb condition: very clean, fresh and attractive with only a couple of light, fine and faint spindle marks on side two.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Quite rare: an obscure artist for a major label, this would have sold in very small numbers and is not seen often.

Brief Info: Tim Hollier is a somewhat obscure British singer-songwriter and I rate this debut album highly. The songs very much in the folk-baroque style with a distinct of psych, at times his voice very much reminds of Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues. The title song is an absolute joy with a lovely haunting atmosphere and worth the price alone. There are 10 main tracks, all of which I like, the final ‘song’ on each side being a very short instrumental lasting only a few seconds. He made just three albums, the second of which must be near impossible to find going on the prices and valuations it achieves – I have never seen it before. But for quality, this debut will take some beating and for those unfamiliar with his music, this is highly recommended.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends on the back via three external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the ‘Patents Pending’ text and original inner sleeve.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: Most of any wear is seen on the top two corner tips that have rubbed. Overall, the laminate retains fine shine and clarity with very decent freshness, it has no lifting bar a tiny blister near the top left corner. Several, but mainly fine edge creases with barely any at all away from the sides. Under angled light, some dulling around the thick record’s rim which is so hard to avoid. But little really detracts from a fine front – not for the highly discerning, but many will enjoy it – for sure, it will not be seen often.

Cover Back: The main matt, unprotected back panel has only gentle traces of any grubbiness or wear and has avoided any creasing or rubbing or note. A small tip crease and rub on the top left. The flipbacks are all very solid and clean without the usual grime lines on the ends. A little burring on the ends of the bottom one and the usual fine hairline type laminate creases, but no damage or lifting. A very fine back to match the front.

Top Edge: A super-fine hairline crack near the centre barely even registers and NO split or anything even close. Tip rubbing but the surface fully laminated and ultra smooth and reasonably straight.

Bottom Edge: Largely the same.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp, the back one more so with very little wear. Slight thickening and minor burring as seen viewed end-on, the front edge a little proud of the back in manufacture. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The front has the wider than average unlaminated strip which has very gently rubbed on the very edge of the edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, quite straight with minimal compression, a small crinkle trace near the top corner. All text is perfect and unworn, also well centred under the solid and unpeeled laminate that mainly remains smooth and clear.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with a couple of small tip creases. Fine shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: A little aged but nothing major and a strong all-round example of this elusive and quite rare later 1960s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This still quite attractive item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with little to fault. A code writting on the top right of the front and includes the ‘PATENT APPLIED FOR’ text as seen on my picture. Barely creased, still clean and aged little with no edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): this splendid record looks very little played and I have no doubts that is the case. An impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. Any surface traces very few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Whispy blemishes only with no penetrating stylus marks at all. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality and somewhat ‘lost’ album plays up to it’s high visual grading, and mostly even above with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. At times quite a gentle and quiet album, so silence will prove near impossible, but here any reminders politely gentle and faint, equally infrequent. Few copies will outperform this near ultimate first pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been carefully handled. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. At times, his voice has distinctive comparison to Justin Haywood, and that recommendation enough to interest many I feel. Compilations of this man’s output can be found on CD, but I am sure the album itself has not been given the digital treatment and is unavailable in it’s entirety. This elusive original record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. For lovers of folky-baroque, psych-tinged music, this is unmissable.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
