Tiffany Shade was an American Psychedelic rock band formed in 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio. They broke up in 1968. They recorded and released one self-titled LP and two singles from the same album on the Mainstream label in 1968 prior to their demise. Tiffany Shade was formed by keyboardist Bob Leonard Folk Guitarist/vocalist Mike Barnes, 12-string guitarist/vocalist Barrow Davidian (deceased), bassist Rick Hohn, later replaced by bassist Robb Clarke-Murphy and drummer Tom Schuster (deceased). On March 2, 1968, Tiffany Shade appeared at the Grande Ballroom in Detroit on the same bill as Big Brother and the Holding Company, the MC5 and the Pink Peech Mob. They also appeared at the Grande Ballroom again on April 5, 1968 along with The Troggs and the MC5. After Tiffany Shade album's release, the band made numerous appearances in their hometown of Cleveland, Ohio and at the Sugarbush ski resort in Warren, Vermont before disbanding in late 1968.

This is the rare one and only Tiffany Shade LP, released on Fontana in the UK in 1968, the LP includes both single releases.

This used to be one of the less championed Mainstreams, but the persistent hype on the label has sent the rep of it soaring. Mainstream seldom spent much time on A & R once the artists had been signed, but Tiffany Shade must have been pushed through quick even by their standards. Hence a rather charming teen garage presentation of what is economy fare westcoast folkrock-psych sounds, plus a bunch of tracks that make no sense at all. LP opens strongly with several raw trips on the early Airplane style; cutting fuzz leads and excellent "Nuggets" vocals should appeal to anyone. Side 2 is less garagey & more goofy top 40, but listenable with class points reaped for a Love cover. All over a bit better than I expected, with some prime slices of 60s cheese-psych. Superb cover artwork, as always with the label. The album was also released in the UK by Fontana. [PL]  (THE COPY WE HAVE HERE -- op.ed.)

I can’t see any reason that Growing Concern is more well-liked than this. Tiffany Shade doesn’t have a female vocalist, but has the same general feel as Growing Concern, but with better songwriting and fewer covers. Most importantly, they have a youthful punky vocal style that’s ten times more appealing than the annoyingly syrupy male singer from Growing Concern. “Would You Take My Mind Out For A Walk” is a highlight. As with the Growing Concern album, side two is a bit weaker than side one, but this is a good album, recommended to fans of pop-oriented garage rock. [AM]

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG NEAR MINT. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record comes in the original “Made in Great Britain” poly-lined stock inner sleeve.

(c)           The record is  apparently  pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)            Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 5:1.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER (THIS IS THE ORIGINAL, LAMINATED, GLOSSY COVER):

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Minor scratch noted across the lamination on top front cover ((nothing significant); possibly a minor printing or cover construction flaw

-        Back cover has a small filing sticker /label, which may be possible to remove with a little effort (we did not attempt to)

-         The laminated cover has a few air 'bubbles' and wrinkles in lamination (this is a common problem with most laminated 50’s and 60’s covers

-         Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 3 (back side)

-         Cover shows some light yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.   (nothing significant)

-         Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine   (nothing significant)

NO OTHER IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER:

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out (drill) holes.

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No writing

-        No stamps

-        No tearing: no chips, dents or nicks on the seams

-        No peel-off marks

-        No stains

-        No mold or mildew spots

-        No water damage

-        No warping

-        No wax, glue, paint or liquid drops on the cover

-        No glue traces or wax residue.

-        No bar codes

-        No RIAA stamps or stickers.
