STRAIGHT, NO CHASER

This is the sixth studio album cut by Thelonious Monk under the production/direction of Teo Macero for Columbia and as such should not be confused with the original motion picture soundtrack to the 1988 film of the same name. The original disc only included six performances, half of which were edited due to the stringent time constraints of vinyl.. The band featured here includes: Monk (piano), Charlie Rouse (tenor sax), Ben Riley (drums), and Larry Gales (bass). This would be the final quartet Monk would assemble to record with in the studio. While far from being somber, this unit retained a mature flavor which would likewise place Monk's solos in a completely new context. At times, this adaptation presents itself more subtly than others. For instance, Monk's extended solo in "Locomotive" never reaches beyond itself due in part to the tempo-laden rhythm section. The contrast of styles, however, appreciates the caliber of this particular solo, including an obvious assertion by Monk which leads the band, albeit temporarily, into playing double-time. Other recommended quartet selections on this disc include a liberated version of the title track, which highlights some stellar interaction between Monk and Rouse. In addition to the quartet sides, Straight, No Chaser contains two unaccompanied piano solos: "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" and "This Is My Story, This Is My Song."

MONK'S MIRACLES

This seven-track compilation consists of sides from Thelonious Monk's earliest Columbia Records' long-players Monk's Dream (1963), Criss-Cross (1963), Big Band and Quartet in Concert (1964), It's Monk's Time (1964), and Misterioso (1965). Although Monk's Miracles (1967) was only available for a limited time through the Columbia Records Club, it offers far more than the typical hastily assembled best-of. The cheery post-bop of "Bye-Ya" -- from Monk's Dream -- is among his finest offerings for the label and a faultless way to kick things off. After Frankie Dunlop's (drums) rousing intro, both Charlie Rouse (tenor sax) and Monk take over and exemplify what made the '60s Thelonious Monk Quartet so singular. The sublime ballad "Crepuscule with Nellie" is lifted from Criss-Cross and it is Rouse who steps up to deliver what is arguably his most heartfelt studio statement in the context of these players. The raucous and rarely anthologized "Four in One" is one of two extended workouts from the Big Band and Quartet in Concert project that was recorded December 30, 1963 at Philharmonic Hall in New York City. Notably, the edited version -- down from nearly 15 minutes to just barely over 11 -- is served up. That would certainly make sense, as the extended performance was not issued until the digital age. Another obscurity is the bop lover's "Stuffy Turkey" -- an admitted variant of Coleman Hawkins' venerable "Stuffy." While many compilers might have glossed over the deep album cut from It's Monk's Time, it is an astute entry and a further example of Monk's quartet doing what they do best. Butch Warren (bass) initiates the tempo and groove, while Rouse and Monk (especially the former) trade some inspired counterpoint. Whether intended or not, the juxtaposition of "Stuffy Turkey" and "I Mean You" is at the very least intriguing. Chiefly because the two are so melodically similar on the surface. The classic title hails from the Big Band and Quartet in Concert and unlike the aforementioned "Four in One," "I Mean You" has not been edited. Despite sounding larger-than-life, the extended combo remain tightly held in-check. They maneuver through the tricky time sequence and equally dense arrangement with ease and finesse to spare. The final two songs initially surfaced on the odds and ends Misterioso. "Well You Needn't" is one of Monk's best-known and loved works and it is easy to understand why when Rouse, Larry Gales (bass), and Riley (drums) swing as solidly as they did on this late February 1965 date at Brandeis University. The concluding "Bemsha Swing" was documented in the cozy confines of San Francisco's Jazz Workshop circa early November of 1964 and is another of Monk's signature composition

·                               CONDITION:

·                               THE RECORDS

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          THE ALBUMS ARE STILL FACTORY SEALED AND IS BELIEVED TO BE PERFECTLY MINT. Please note: sealed items are assumed to be mint and are sold as-is, as we have no way of inspecting them. For our policy on still sealed records ►click here (PLEASE READ BEFORE PLACING A BID).

(b)          Mono pressing of these titles is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its stereo counterpart. We think that the mix is more natural, humane, "organic" and that the mixes are somewhat different than on the stereo version. We estimate that stereo copies of this album outnumber mono pressings by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(c)           The records are  apparently pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          The records are STILL in their original inner, perforated plastic baggies (we can see them through the opening)

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVERS
