Hi, I am Mike, I am 46 and have been a music collector and enthusiast for over 33 years now. We all wish we could turn back the clock and buy those wonderful brand new records from the 60s and 70s, but alas, this is not possible; so I always try to offer the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. No vinyl/music lover really would choose to buy second-hand, but this is only way now to own these valuable, prized and ellusive items now. I pride myself on offering a variety of genres to keep my site as interesting as possible. I will rarely offer any record that falls below a true Excellent grading, unless its of a certain rarity which will justify offering a lesser grade. I try, to the best of my ability to describe as accurately and as honesty as I can all items I offer for sale with all the relevant information I can think of to help any potential bidder and collector. You may notice I only submit records sparingly on Ebay - on average ONEADAY, hence the name - time rarely allows for more as I Play-Grade virtually every record I offer in their entirity, not just bits to guess a grade (on a Rega 3 deck with Ortofon cartridge) - visuals alone do not always tell a true or full story - I will mention any defects or flaws no matter how small that I notice to be fair as possible to any interested reader – I am very fussy and my buyers have the right to be too. Every record I offer, whether it be a common or rare item deserves the same respect as far as I am concerned and will be treated the same - just because an item is rare does not always mean its good. I get just as much pleasure offering a relatively common record in stunning near mint condition as the real rare items. All the pictures I use for your guidance are taken with a digital camera or scanned - they are NOT improved, cleaned-up or made better looking than they are with camera trickery or enhancing with digital programmes. What you see is what you get. The only thing I cannot guarantee one hundred percent is exact colour matching - this depends on the lighting at the time and that is out of my control, but I feel sure most items will be very close to the actual real item. Variation can sometimes occur too in colour of the label scans and labels taken next to the sleeve with a digital camera, the scanned full label pictures should be the most accurate. If any picture I take looks more flattering than the actual item for any reason, I will clearly state the fact in the advert. Label/Format: Parlophone - Original yellow and black format that has the far rarer and earlier Jobete publishing credit for ‘Money’ also recording first published 1963. The Parlophone Co Ltd and Made in Gt Britain text. This is a first pressed copy with the rare super early Patents pending on the cover and also Patents applied for on the ‘Use Emitex’ polylined inner, which is in superb unsplit and clean condition. The lining fully intact and clear and hardly any creasing, clean with only modest ageing discolouration - exceptional give the great age.

Label Condition: Age defying conditions, very clean and neat indeed with little wear at all. This pair include the embossed KT tax codes on side one that are a little harder to see as the inner circle area around the hole is textured and makes these fine letters more obscured. But these two early tax letters retain all their ink and have not been eroded or flattened. Spindle marks are relatively modest for this forty+ year album and I put them in the light+ category being way less than average for this very popular Beatles issue. Wear around the actual hole is very light indeed with just the very hole circumference edges being lightly rubbed but still very neat and I would say again probably as light as will ever realistically be found these days. All the evidence on the labels and audio playback quality tell me this vintage mono record has been only modestly played and that in itself is very unusual. This is an exceptional first pressing. Rarity: I continued to state the regular Beatles albums are not that rare with some exceptions. The early stereo versions, and the late monos are scarcer. The conditions are what separates run of the mill Beatles items from the exceptional. I would say this Jobete first pressed copy is scarce and in this type of condition it is very scarce. Visually this is exceptional and audio quality is superb, this is a very high level intense recording with massive dynamics and very intense sound. The mono versions are often played into submission and sound quality suffers accordingly. This one plays virtually distortion-free including the very difficult final track ‘Money’ making this record desirably and exceptional. Please refer to my paragraph further down ‘mono vs stereo’ to put a fine vintage copy like this into true perspective.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The Fab Fours’ second album charting at No 1 in the UK and US and a huge leap forward making the band a household name everywhere. Brilliant pop songs including more self written titles that had style, class and charm with a real ‘feel good’ factor - the phenomenon was gathering apace. This early copy is quite exceptional, a few blemishes but almost too few to mention - but I will of course. The cover has a shop stamp on the back top right (please see this in close up). I barely call this a blemish as such because it almost adds to this cover’s charm and confirms it’s great age, I would imagine this practice only happened in the early 60s. The stamps words are very clear, clean and sharp and the four figure phone number confirms how far back in time this one originates. This is one probably one of the very best examples of a ‘Patents pending’ vintage version cover for this album I have yet seen. The massively thick record has a few surface marks but little to nothing sounds and playback is stunning with massive loud sound and intense mix that is almost totally distortion free - a hugely important factor that should never be taken for granted. This fine original copy should please many if not most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EX, possibly worthy of a (+) in all honesty, because this is still pretty exceptional. Its a single format, laminated front, large mono on the front, Use Emitex cleaning material on the back. Three huge flipbacks, printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. Patents pending. This has a shop stamp on the back (A1 Stores). A very fine example and way above the average found these days.

Lamination: Strong laminate that still retains a fine shine with minimal signs of dulling. A very faint press-mark from the very heavy record can just be seen under angled lighting but no peeling, dry areas, indentations and even surface marks are minimal. One small fine tear on the right opening edge in the central area has been very carefully repaired and it shows very little - one of those minor blemishes I mentioned earlier. Importantly creasing is almost conspicuous by its absence making this vintage sleeve very much the exception rather than the rule - so often this classic black and white cover is ruined by heavy creasing - not this one. This is very fine laminate and at 40 some years old in quite remarkable shape.

Cover Front: Truly lovely, clean with little wear, that nick repair apart (and this is not even that noticeable anyway). This sets a very high standard and most again will enjoy this one.

Cover Back: These types, this great age, are very prone to all the types of wear possible so glad to say again this is pretty exceptional. Mild discolouring making a consistent off-white but avoiding deep yellowing. A few light marks and very, very mild traces of grubbiness (probably too strong a word but I cant think of anything better), this really is very light indeed really. The imprint line including the patents pending is crystal clear and sharp (please see the close up of this too). The three large flipbacks are close to perfect with no lifting, minimal hairline creases and fraying, even the edges are neat and clean which is pretty unusual. The back is devoid of rubbing or unsightly ringwear, not a trace of this at all, and creasing is again is largely absent, any present is very light and almost invisible. This fragile exposed back is again very strong and will be hard to beat in real terms. Any potential bidder will have to decide whether the shop stamp is a blemish or not - personally I think it even adds to this vintage cover.

Top Edge: Virtually unworn.

Bottom Edge: Unworn.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Minimal signs of handling and very light light feathering traces, one repaired tiny nick tear which I have already mentioned. Record entered on right outside edge.

Spine and Text: Solid and square and quite neat, some toning where its been exposed probably in an open fronted rack all these years. Small central top edge rub that has rubbed the top of the h in With and just clipped the very top of the T in The and B in Beatles - that apart all the text is strong and no other wear.

Corners: Four very neat corners that retain fine shape with little overall wear than just the very end tips, four of the finest corners I have yet seen on a cover this age.

Cover Summary: A really lovely all round example of this fragile early 60’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This strong item should please the vast majority of collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX. A strong visual copy and for a first pressing it will be pretty hard to find much cleaner. I have lost count how many copies of this title, most later pressings too, that I’ve seen recently in shocking states, a maze of marks in wrecked covers with spindle marks covering the whole label, not just around the hole areas. This copy is clean, still rich black, retaining a decent shine and very heavily pressed with deep grooves. A few light surface marks or light paper scuff but probably as light as they get on a played record, this looks really lovely still. A copy modestly played on all the evidence, most early copies were heavily ‘used’. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Sonically this pressing is in a class of its own and this super record plays easily up to its high visual grading and quite honestly exceeds it for almost its entirity with little to fault. Few, if any pops or clicks were noted and it has strong, undistorted sound, never take this for granted, all frequencies are sharp and clear, even the innermost tracks - sound quality is astonishing with a massive dynamic range and very full sound, an incredible George Martin production that will blow you away. The final songs on both sides play well which is quite unusual, I have heard this pair simply fall apart with distortion and break up caused by groove wear or damage on some copies and these, like the rest play exceptionally well with little problem and even today they will test the tracking ability of modern decks. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed, and few copies will play better than this. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played quite lightly most likely on more sympathetic equipment and has been generally well stored and looked after. Little, if anything spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this vintage copy. This copy could prove very difficult to find significantly better.

Mono vs Stereo, an overview: Always a matter of opinion which is better or more important. For any serious collector where there is a choice e.g. Beatles, Stones, Hendrix etc. both are essential. True Stereo albums give great imagery and presence whereas mono albums usually are more dynamic, louder and present the detail more clearly. Mono albums are far harder to find in genuinely top playing condition. Most were heavily played, particularly the truly great bands and artists, often covered in mark and scratches, many severe and labels that were a mass of spindle marks. The majority were played on vintage and unsubtle decks with heavy tonearms and thick styli (often sapphire, not diamond, that chipped more easily) that rendered heavy wear in a very short time to many a fine classic record. Wear to the delicate groove walls, particularly the innermost tracks to the labels were most vulnerable where the tracking angle became more severe and the backdrag actually stripped the delicate groove walls. This resulted in surface noise and mild/moderate distortion or worse. These old decks tracked by sheer weight and little of any refined engineering. Next time you see such a deck at a local record fayre, feel the weight of the arm, it almost makes you wonder how any records survived at all. The point of this paragraph is emphasise that when a truly clean, lightly played and great sounding 60s mono album (or stereo come to that) is offered, treasure it, because for sure they are truly getting vary rare and precious - beware - demand only play-graded records. As a general guide to rarity, mono was the far more common format from 61–65; Around 66–67 the balance was roughly equal, then from 68-69 the balance swung more to stereo, making monos from these dates far scarcer, even rare - this guide is important and effects values greatly.

Album Played For Grading: Yes.

Final Summary: As stated, a few minor blemishes - how many perfect originals will still be found these days in all honesty? This has few really and for looks and playback it sets a very high standard, I feel most would be happy just to match it. Although this is probably one of most found Beatles albums around; few will be first pressings and very few these days will improve on this record’s sound qualities. If this is still missing from your collection or an upgrade is required this could be the very copy you have been waiting for. I strongly recommend this one, it should please most collectors and will only fall a little short for the perfectionists I would think - good luck again – Mike.
