The Who : My Generation 2B / 1B 1st Press Mono 1965 (Brunswick)

This first mono pressing on the Brunswick label plays to an incredible standard with no interference at all.  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is on a scale I do not think I have heard before and this (and the cover) was clearly so well looked after down the decades, a genuine collector.  There are a couple of very quiet ticks on the 'I'm A Man' intro and that is it, I cannot overstate just how stunning the sonic quality is.  There is some of the usual inner groove distortion on 'My Generation' but that's unavoidable, it's just how the record was recorded / produced.  It's still a damn good listen!  No such issue with the 'The Ox', the final track on S2, that plays with incredible quality.  The vinyl is visually stunning also and I honestly do not think I have seen one as impressive as this.  To think it's very nearly 60 years old!

The cover is without question the finest, cleanest example I have ever owned.  You always look at the back cover of course and it really is in lovely condition with barely any marking.  I do think the poly-lined inner sleeve is the original but it doesn't have the date code '125' on it.  I can only assume that is because this 2B/1B matrix is one of the first press variations so perhaps that one was out of print by then.  Everything else certainly suggests it is original.

The vinyl is in fantastic condition and still holds a superb glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  Under a bright light I can only see a small number of faint hairlines and there is nothing that stands out.  No groove or surface wear it is a work of art!  You can clearly see the KT tax stamp on the run out grooves and the Brunswick labels are in lovely condition with only a little spindle wear.

Play grading  

The classic intro on 'Out In The Street' plays with perfect clarity and already you can recognise that fell, deep rich mono sound.  Daltrey's opening vocal is just as impressive and it continues to play with no ticks, clicks, pops or static.  The sonic quality could not be any stronger and I am 100% confident in grading it as Mint because every note is so clean and precise and there is literally no intrusion.

'I Don't Mind' keeps up this fine start and plays with stunning clarity and definition through every section.  For a debut album the production values are so high and that is further enhanced on a clean vinyl such as this.  Once again there is no background and the instrumental section exemplifies that, it is superb!  Another Mint track and that includes the fade out.

The intro on 'The Good's Gone' is faultless - a rarity because it often plays with static distortion.  The opening vocal section has no interference and thereafter plays to the same high end standard.  The vocal harmonies have lost none of their original quality and Townshend's mid instrumental could not play any better, no distorted sound at all.  The entire track plays with stunning clarity, power and depth.  Hang on I'm going to say Mint- due to a couple of barely audible statics on the fade out!

This has to be the most 'complete' version of 'La-La-La-Lies' I have ever heard.  The sonic quality is phenomenal - so often this classic is affected by static / distortion but that is not the case here.  The audio is so clean and 'fresh' and the power is undiminished despite it being very nearly 60 years old.  A STUNNING Mint version.

I'm lost for word!  Another classic in 'Much Too Much' and to say it plays well is an understatement!  The clarity, depth and power of the audio is astonishing and there is not one single negative.  There is no 'muddiness' to the sound and absolutely no distortion on the top end.  A great melody and Mint all the way.

As any Who audiophile will know 'My Generation' always plays with some inner groove distortion on the very first Brunswick pressings and it is just a matter of how much.  I am pleased to say it is kept to a minimum here and is quite possibly the cleanest version I have ever listened to.  This is being played through a stereo set up so I'm sure it could be 'improved' when played as a mono record and in a sense it should not be downgraded as there is no actual interference.  Perhaps a little more distortion during Moon's final frenetic solo but is remains a great listen and the whole track can still be turned up 'loud'.  I think Near Mint- is a fair assessment of the audio.

'The Kids Are Alright' again has no static distortion on the brief intro and the opening vocal section is just perfect.  The clarity and warmth of the audio is out of this world!  It continues to play with exceptional quality - the instrumental section is breath-taking, never heard it play so powerfully, and the final vocal has no intrusion either.  Wow!  Mint

The soulful 'Please Please Please' plays with sublime clarity and there is no interference.  One mega quiet static sound that really does not warrant a mention and I'm still going to grade it as Mint, I'm sure the winning bidder will agree!

The opening vocal on 'It's Not True' blasts out of the speakers - the sonic quality is amazing!  The brief instrumental that follows and the next vocal again are flawless and it continues to play with STUNNING quality.  Yes I can get a little 'verbose' but seriously this audio is incredible.  The power and definition of the audio is on a level I have not heard before.  There is one tick right at the end of the fade out but it's practically in the dead wax and Mint- is still very much deserved.

'I'm A Man' has a couple of very quiet ticks on the opening vocal but they are very much in the background.  It has a number of relatively quiet passages and yet the clarity is stunning - the long instrumental is a prime example of that and it does not even have a single dust tick.  Daltrey's vocal is strong and clear throughout and Moon's work at the end is so powerful.  The intro is Near Mint but the rest is Mint without doubt.

The guitar intro on 'A Legal Matter' once again has no static distortion and as Moon joins in the playback can only be described 'as new'.  The first vocal is equal to that and from then on it plays with tremendous power and depth and... no interference.  A 'busy' powerful track and yet the original sound quality is still very much in evidence.  Mint

'The Ox' plays with superb audio from start to finish.  The percussive intro is faultless and the next section is just as strong and clear.  This classic instrumental is regularly affected by distortion but I cannot detect any here.  Hard to believe I know but the clarity of sound and separation is stunning on so many levels.  Each note is so clean and succinct and there is nothing getting in the way of the audio, nothing!  A stunning version with all three musicians showing just how good they were in their early days.  A Mint conclusion to this unbelievable album!

The Cover & Inner Sleeve

As stated this is the finest example of this iconic cover that I have ever seen.  It has been so well preserved and is just so clean!  So impressive that it has still kept its shape so well also.  The edges are unmarked and the thin spine is 100% legible without any wear although perhaps it is just a little compressed.  All four corners are in superb shape with no real wear and the opening edge remarkably has no handling wear either.  The laminated front cover is stunning with only one tiny corner crease bottom left - there is no laminate 'lift' and no edge creases next to the spine which is a rarity.  It's the non-laminated back cover which is the real stand out feature!  It is so clean with no obvious marking at all, it has just some minor ringwear.  For the sake of completeness there is a faint crease top right but it's hardly noticeable with a cursory glance.  You will not find many better than this!  Nearly 60 years old!

The poly-lined inner sleeve is in excellent condition and has no side splits, tears or marking just some creasing which is mainly in the corners.  It has Made in England, British patent No.  800513 and Foreign patents pending printed on both sides and like I say just has the date code missing.

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
