The Who : Live At Leeds A1 / B1 1st Press Black Lettering + 12 Inserts Rare 1970
This rare first pressing with the Black lettering on the front cover plays to an incredible standard with no interference and is the finest example I have ever listened to. The vinyl is visually stunning so this is perhaps not a surprise! There are no clicks or pops and only a handful of very quiet statics, as per usual I have given a full audio grading below. I cannot emphasise enough just how strong and clear the audio - so often with this classic live album there is some interference but not here! All tracks play with stunning clarity and power but the extended 'My Generation' and 'Magic Bus' in particular play with sensational sonic quality.
The iconic brown 'bootleg' cover is in excellent shape with only minimal wear and remains perfectly intact which is a genuine rarity. The 12 inserts are superb with very little wear and of course the large Marquee poster is included as it always was with a genuine first press. The inner sleeve has some fading but not side splits. A STUNNING 'package'!
It is rumoured that only 300 were 'pressed' with the black print on the front cover but I'm not sure how true that is as they do seem to crop up at regular intervals! Regardless of that the 'black print' one is the genuine first press.

The audio on S1 is Mint(-) (T1 opening section Near Mint-)
The audio on S2 is Mint(-)
The 'bootleg' gatefold is Ex-
The 12 inserts range between Ex+ & Mint - more of the latter!
The labels are Near Mint
The Plastic Bags... inner sleeve is VG++
The vinyl is in beautiful condition and still has an immaculate jet-black glossy sheen with no scratches. Under a bright light I can only see a very small number of very faint sleeve removal hairlines and a couple of tiny scuffs that are not easy to find anyway! A small hairline mark at the beginning of S1 but it has no affect on the superb audio. There is no groove wear as the record has hardly been played and the Track Record labels are stunning with only minimal spindle wear on S1 and hardly any on S2.
Play grading
The intro on 'Young Man' has only a couple of minor statics and Daltrey's opening vocal is close to perfect with only a couple of half second static 'moments' which are only very quiet. The silent sections play with stunning clarity and then the long instrumental passage is 'as new' with no intrusion. The rhythm section of Moon and Entwistle is superb here, the audio is so strong and deep. I guess Townshend's work is rather good also! The final vocal has no background and with regards grading the intro section is Near Mint- and the rest is Mint for sure.
'Substitute' plays with exceptional audio with no interference. Once again the clarity and power of the audio is so impressive and there is no distortion on the top end. A Mint version in every way.
The spoken intro on 'Summertime Blues' has a couple of statics and then the actual intro plays to perfection. The opening vocal is equal to that and it continues in the same precise way. You can turn it up to max without fear of distortion and it could not play any better. I mean the mid instrumental is just incredible! Townshend's is in his element here and the sonic quality is 10/10 to say the least. The final vocal is faultless and again this deserves to be graded as Mint
'Shakin' All Over' plays with stunning quality from the get go. The intro / opening vocal have no interference and from then it plays with great power and depth - the instrumental section is out of this world! It is so loud and powerful and the clarity and depth is not affected in anyway, there is no distortion. There are a couple of minor statics towards during the final vocal and Mint- is still a fair assessment of the audio.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The intro on the classic 'My Generation...' has no background and the opening vocal is on the same level. The first instrumental is flawless as is the next vocal section. The power and definition of the music during the long instrumental is just STUNNING and the See Me, Feel Me... excerpt could not play any better either. The quiet section that follows has only a couple of light statics and next vocal is perfect. This sonic quality is kept up as it progresses and Townshend's work is again so strong. The clarity during the next quiet passage is incredible! It plays with such delicate precision and I only 'heard' a couple of barely audible dust ticks. Loud and quiet in equal measure the sonic quality is just breath-taking. Aside from a handful of minor static ticks during the next quiet section this truly is audio of the highest calibre. There is no 'muddiness' to the sound and if you get the impression that I am impressed by this audio then you would be right! The rest of this 14 minute epic plays with unbelievable quality, Moon's ballistic percussion and Townshend's work adding so much to the audio. The end section is phenomenal - the clarity and power is just off the scale. Ok a handful of light ticks but I still think a Mint- grade is fair. What. A. Version!
The 'percussive' intro on 'Magic Bus' plays perfectly as does the entire intro and Daltrey's opening vocal has no background either. As good as new so far! It continues in exactly the same way and Entwistle's bass is so strong and deep here, great sound. This is a spectacular version - every vocal and instrumental section, loud and quiet, plays with sublime clarity and definition and there is no background of any kind. The high octane section just prior to the final section is incredible - sorry if I'm a little over-enthusiastic but with sonic quality like this I can be forgiven! The final section keeps up the standard and this easily grades as Mint as it just could not play any better. It is the most 'complete' version I have ever listened to and that pretty much applies to the entire album!
The 'Bootleg' Cover, Inserts & Inner Sleeve
The iconic cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear, quite a rarity really as it is not easy to keep in decent condition. The edges and spine are so clean with barely any wear and the front cover is impressive also with only a little fading around the edges and a couple of small faint marks, nothing obvious. The back cover has some fading / marking next to the spine that is a bit more obvious and a couple of other faint marks and then the inside of the 'gatefold' is superb with hardly any wear, just some very minor spotting around around the bottom of the inner spine. The staples front and back are still firmly in place by the way. This is in excellent shape overall when you consider the flimsy card that it was produced with.
The 12 inserts are in superb condition with hardly any wear. Two have a little 'spotting' in a top corner and 2/3 have some minor corner creasing but overall they are super clean and clearly have hardly been handled. As this is a first press it has the large MARQUEE poster, the 'Live At Leeds' one came later.
Remarkably the original grease-proof bag that contained the inserts is included also. It has some creasing as you would expect.
The poly-lined 'Plastic Bags...' inner sleeve has no side splits or tears but does have some age related fading and a kind of white mark in one top corner. I'm not entirely sure if this is the original one as it is not date coded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD). An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known. All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection. They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection. I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.
The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each. There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up! Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
