Description
For auction: The Special AKA/The Selecter: Gangsters/The Selecter (UK 2-Tone 45 TT1 1979 FIRST PRESS)
Here is an extremely rare opportunity to own a true piece of pop history. The first 2-Tone release, TT1/2, a spilt recording between The Specials (still called on these early pressings The Special AKA) and The Selecter. This is the single that sparked a magnificent musical movement in the UK and eventually worldwide.
What makes this particular copy so very desirable to collectors is the 'punk-style' stencilled sleeve announcing both the bands names. On initial copies these markings were actually hand stamped by THE BAND THEMSELVES. A tiny amount of these original first issue bags have survived. Well here is one.
The record itself is in terrific shape. The vinyl still dark and glossy with but a couple of very light hairline marks of no consequence to the crisp and powerful 2-Tone sound. This edition of Gangsters is also different from later versions in that it fades out rather suddenly. This was quickly replaced by another edit where the closing instrumental passage comes to a full stop.
The famous 2-Tone label are paper-made (another indication of a first pressing) and are clear, bright black & white and unmarked, free from any rips and writing. All in all this is a remarkable item to have survived intact for fully FORTY YEARS now.
"Bernie Rhodes knows, don't argue!"
