rare 1967 GREAT MOD PSYCHEDELIA from the highly regarded SMOKE here! pressing 7"
Top mod beat band progressing to a psychedelic era, with a seriously good record. Starting out as The Shots, the band were a little surprised to be shuffled in front of the 'London mafia' kingpins the Kray twin brothers, handed over for their fleeting music management interests! Whatever seeded that idea, perhaps came out of Brian Epstein's fame - and probably a desire to have a legitimate profile as cover for their otherwise seedy underworld activities. The band very quietly faded from their notice....and changed name. Still, they were not going to disappear - and upon releasing a brilliant 45 with the new name, they hit the charts. It got attention from the censors though, for drug references (the band denied it with crossed fingers! .....but they were obviously aware). That record features the tasty use of a girlfriend's nail file across the guitar strings, by lead playing Mal Luker. Well they clearly weren't shy about suggestive lyrics - as they showed with THIS knockout! A little echo/ reverb on the vocal in the right places, and it's a psychedelic sixties GEM!! It really is "wonderful", and what collecting psych is all about. The flip reveals their whimsical side, also a good pop piece, though lyrically less dangerous! This is very hard to find as an original issue - and a treasure in this condition. . It's in TOP play condition too.A great slice of mod-psych.
