Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with barely any spindle marks. A rare example of this classic appearing little played.

Cat Number: COC 59100 [later pressings had the COC prefix changed to CUN].

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 130 grams. Actually heavier than most I have held.

Country of Manufacture: Record & Insert: ENGLAND. Cover: Germany. This copy includes the much rarer heavy-duty ‘PAN’ zip as seen in close-up. These are highly prized and much rarer than the standard, smaller, lighter-weight zips. The covers that included them were manufactured in Germany for the UK market. These were limited and only briefly available.

Rarity: Moderately scarce with the standard zipper, and then only if all elements are in better condition, this record predictably sold very well. Early examples with the heavy-duty ‘PAN’ zip are much rarer. Especially with an intact cover and the zip in fully working condition with barely any hint of age or tarnishing. Arguably the most challenging aspect, is finding the record that plays really well. Rolling Stones records were no longer pressed by Decca, and sound-quality was no longer guaranteed. Indeed this record can be hugely variable, often with pressing noises, major crackle and even distortion. This one plays superbly with very little unwanted bar three or four clicks at the very end of ‘Bitch’, almost as the song ends. That brief blemish apart, this is one of the finest pressings I have heard in ages. This particular format example, in this very fine overall condition, is difficult to find and elusive.

Brief Info: The first album on the new Rolling Stones Record label and first to feature Mick Taylor as a full-time member replacing Brian Jones. A wonderful album and a true classic that includes the popular single ‘Brown Sugar’, along with varied material, some quite dark. Famed for it’s zipper cover which was based on an idea by Andy Warhol and designed by Craig Braun, many regard it as the greatest album cover ever made. Inside, and beneath the zip lies a pair of white pants and text ‘Andy Warhol - this photograph may not be etc’. This copy includes the much rarer, sort-after and collectable big zip, and is overall a very fine example. These are becoming increasing difficult to find.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably much better still, only marked down for the usual marks on the back from other zippers. A single unlaminated cover with a third ‘dividing’ sheet of card piece inside. Matt finished with the rarer much bigger ‘PAN’ zipper – as seen, this is much different to the standard light-weight zip most include. Printed in Germany, this quite normal with this zip and made for the UK market. Includes the insert sheet that was printed by Richard Davis Ltd.

Cover Front: This front is very impressive indeed with no damage to those delicate cut parts of the belt near the top. So often these are seen torn and creased, this fragile area is superb as seen in close-up. The card generally clean, fresh with few marks and barely any creasing. The star of this cover is the rare ‘PAN’ zipper, that has hardly aged at all, and still fully working with minimal effort. I have rarely seen this, or any other zipper less aged or tarnished. Possibly due to cost, this large, heavyweight zip was quickly dropped and replaced by the smaller version. These are seldom seen or offered and genuinely getting hard to find. This classic cover front will prove very difficult to find better.

Cover Back: The back has a press mark cluster in a similar position to the zip, that is very common indeed, in fact finding this cover with none is beyond difficult. A few other marks are also present, but do not show too much unless viewed under light. This the only reason for a more cautious grading, there is not much else to fault. To be clear, the mark on the right buttock is NOT a scratch, that is part of the artwork. Overall, the back has fared well and actually has less marks than many seen these days.

Cover Inner Sheet: From what I can see, this looks perfect with white pants and midriff artwork looking practically as made with text details mentioned above.

Top Edges: Minimal traces of any thickening or burring and NO tears or splits. The record enters on this top edge and rarely is it seen much neater than this. One hundred percent guaranteed untrimmed with NO repairs.

Bottom Edge: Again neat with any rubbing very light and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: This edge is closed and it’s edge very neat with barely any rubbing. Also this edge has the card end that is stuck down to finish this cover off. This fragile end is ultra crisp, straight and solid and has clearly never come unstuck.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with any compression light, the ends lightly pinched in manufacture. All the text is pristine as seen.

Cover Summary: Not quite perfect, but will any version of this groundbreaking cover ever be? This is a very fine, and importantly, attractive example of this early-made cover with it’s original COC number and much rarer big zip. Regarded by most as a ‘classic’ sleeve and a work-of-art with it’s links to the artist Andy Warhol. The PAN zip itself will rarely be found better than this, this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a plain white, unlined inner has little wear at all. Any creasing light and little, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Insert Sheet: NEAR MINT: clean and crisp, uncreased with very sharp edges. This is little short of as-made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a lovely visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and solidly pressed with better than average weight. This record was often pressed very thin. Any surface marks or blemishes, few, fine and light. The odd light dull mark or two is purely within the pressing and harmless. A copy appearing very little played on all the evidence. Overall, the playing surfaces look ‘purer’ and cleaner in manufacture than many I have seen. Often these appear dulled with surface marks seen within the pressing, more like the budget labels of the time. With the oil shortage of the early 1970s, recycled or part recycled vinyl was often used which meant less than wonderful sound – all collectors of similar age to myself will remember these well. This copy has minimal traces of such ‘impurity’, thus the sound is superior in all respects. I never take any copy of this album for granted however clean it looks until I have played it all. Loud crackle, pressing noises and even horrible loud distortions – and often on the cleanest looking copies you will find, are far from uncommon. These hidden nasties can be all too apparent on this record and many collectors will know this. A very difficult one to find that will play well throughout, this has little else to fault bar those three or four clicks at the very end of ‘Bitch’ that I have mentioned already. Knowing what many copies can sound like, I consider this one almost exceptional, and it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I?offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This landmark classic album, for most, plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little else to fault bar those tiny few brief clicks as mentioned above. A way cleaner than average pressing and one to be played and enjoyed. This has quite compact groove width, thus not the loudest of cuts, so it needs to be turned up. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound, better with higher volume. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and that is unusual too, there are no tracking issues*. Many I have heard have had inherent crackle and Rolling Stones Records pressings generally were not as reliable as Decca. But this is a very clean pressing, and compared to most I have heard, exceptional. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled – often the cover marks were present even from new from covers being stacked atop of each other which meant the zips made marks on the back, all collectors would have seen this before. Little of any note, spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this evergreen classic. This rarer big zip cover copy, will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
