Rarity: Moderate in terms of units sold, this was a chart-topper in most record buying countries. However this is a much rarer and complete copy that includes the very rare front cover, large promotional sticker. These were applied to a few initial copies to promote this new Rolling Stones album that did not include the title on either the front of back (but did so on the spine). These are rarely seen or offered, and for some who had them initially, many would have attempted removal probably with disastrous results. This is the first one of these I have seen in many years and few surface now.

Brief Info: A popular chart-topping 1973 album that included the hit single ‘Angie’. The most notorious however was the final track ‘Star Star’ with its repetitive expletive. Lavishly packaged with its gatefold cover and two insert sheets – both included with this superb example. The very large promotional goats head soup sticker on the front cover makes this a significantly rarer piece and were only featured on a few select runs. The record cleanly pressed with no inherent pressing issues, it plays impressively throughout.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: arguably better. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes two insert sheets and its plain white inner sleeve. Also the very elusive and scarce front cover sticker as seen in close-up.

Cover Front: The front is clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any creasing, so attractive and little short of as-made. The large goats head soup sticker is also impressive and hardly aged. A couple of tiny rim ‘chips’ apart, this is also as issued and clearly never removed. A massive features on this cover that will rarely be seen or offered.

Cover Back: The back has several press marks near the top, they mostly show under light and have not removed any ink. The usual suspect for these being quite obvious – the Sticker Fingers zip being rested against it – although that cover is one of the greatest in rock history, it does have a lot to answer for for causing marks to other album covers it rested against. Othere than these quite light marks, this back has little else to fault, the lack of ring wear is always good news.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside either, clean and attractive as-seen.

Top Edges: Straight, flat, parallel and virtually unworn.

Bottom Edges: Almost the same again, the general lack of rubbing on these storage edges is more unusual and always good news again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly very sharp with any thickening very little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on the back edge, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: The spine is close to perfect. Solid, quite thick and robust, also straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn, the surface and folds unfaded, clean and barely rubbed.

Corners: Any tip rubs or creasing small and light, excellent mostly shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this quite wear-prone 1970’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better – finding at all with the large promotional sticker will always prove challenging. Limited and elusive, this beautiful feature item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a basic plain white unlined inner sleeve that has very gently aged with only light discolouration. Two immaculate window circles, some fairly modest creasing and more natural crinkle, all edges unsplit with no repairs.

The Brown Lyric/Graphic Insert: NEAR MINT: virtually as-made. Printed both sides on thin card in England by Richard Davis Ltd with matt surfaces.

The Goat’s Head Soup Insert: EXCELLENT(++): printed one side only in matt. A very small semi-crease on the top right corner and unmounted. The picture side is superb with deep vivid colour. The white back has a little light toning towards the bottom to politely remind of age.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: better still side two. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence, a couple of light surface, superficial scuffs on side one that do nothing, any marks or blemishes few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. The record plays very impressively with very little unwanted. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This famous Rolling Stones album plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – a couple or three very gentle ticks, but little else, overall a very clean clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has been generally well stored and mostly carefully handled within a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. The stickered cover being a very rare opportunity for fans and collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
