Label Conditions: Both in superb condition, being clean, fresh and attractive with any of the very few spindle marks being fine and light. This scarce record looks hardly played with sound to match.

Brief Info: Decided to pigeon-hole this under ‘Blues’ because it’s that genre HE is best known for, but this one is a little different. An absolutely superb, blistering big-band live set recorded at the Marquee Club in London. This is jazz-blues-rock at its very best and superbly recorded too with some fantastic solos - none too long, but memorable. Formerly of John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, this quality percussionist with his trademark love of the Red Indian culture, hits all all the right spots on this wonderful set. I personally regard this as one of his finest ever recordings and one of the more elusive as well. A very early copy that appears hardly played, this sounds marvellous with top sound quality. The cover has some rubbing on the bottom storage edges, and the owner put his name on the back – this time fairly discretely, so that could be an issue for the more discerning collector. But is the record is of paramount importance, this will take some beating.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: this in terms of the bottom edge rubbing, NOT the name on the back (near the bottom back left, on the bass drum). Any opinion on this is purely personal, so any collector makes up their own mind on that. An unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace, includes the blue Decca polylined inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Another wear-prone matt cover, the only rubbing seen on a very impressive front, is on the bottom edge and tips. Hardly any creasing, clean and fresh with no sticker issues.

Cover Back: Less edge rubbing this side, but as stated, the previous owner put his name on the bass drum near the bottom left. Clearly this is prone to ringwear which it has avoided. One minor thumb semi-crease, little else.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Minimal handling traces or wear, this is again impressive.

Top Edges: Both straight and flush, minimal traces of patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Moderate consistent rubbing, this has encroached a little on to the front.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, all being mainly sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Record can enter on either edge as both are open, neither have any adhesive residue or evidence of ever being closed.

Spine and Text: The spine is very nice indeed with his Red Indian feather trademark artwork. Solid, thick, straight with any compression light. A little tilt being very difficult to avoid totally. Folded square,so the edges meet up closely and parallel. All text and artwork is near perfect and barely worn with no fading. Even the hinges are impressive with no scuffs or rubbing.

Corners: Moderate rubbing on the right corners, hardly any on the spine. Very fine shape mostly retained, the spine even better. No knocks or dinks or any note.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this very wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Even with the bottom edge rubbing and the neat rear name, this is still an attractive item that should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): a heavy-duty Decca-style polylined inner sleeve. Gently aged only with mild hint of discolouration, mostly near the seam adhesive areas. Two pristine window circles and the lining fresh and very clear. One corner crease and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): even this being conservative, this is a fantastic copy that appears hardly played. Only ultra fine and faint surface traces under light, few will even get close, two beautiful playing surfaces that are unbanded.Very clean with excellent shine and quite heavily pressed. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This fantastic live album plays even above its high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all those brass instruments sound terrific. All frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from Deram – part of, and pressed by Decca. Few available copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very carefully and lightly on a top-quality system. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
