When The Glass Family secured their contract with Warner Bros., they went into the studio in the summer of '67 to record their material, which was the culmination of stuff they had developed through their existence as a live act. They were pretty young at the time, but had earned a good reputation as a seasoned performance act. The resulting album was rejected by the brass at WB. as a little too crude for their taste, and sent them back to the drawing board to try one more time. Taking no chances, they virtually scrapped the entire first album, and giving a complete renovation to only one title from that earlier collection. Their efforts paid off well, as this work was well worth the extra time. Finally seeing the light of day by the first half of 1968, "Electric Band" is noticeably more polished than their first attempt. Yet at the same time, it is also distinctly more underground in orientation. It has substantially more psychedelic flavor than Vol 1 as well. Whereas the first was more in an uptempo, feel good kind of rock album, the second made dramatically better use of studio production techniques to achieve a sound which totally raises it to another level. This issue on Maplewood is marketed as a reissue of the released album, with the unreleased album included as bonus material. But since I own the original, I prefer to consider this the archival issue of their unreleased first album, and which just happens to include a reissue of the "Elec. Band" album as a bonus. But this is worth it to owners of the orig vinyl even more, because I believe it was almost certainly remastered, though I cannot find any reference to that fact anywhere on the packaging. It just sounds considerably better than I remember the original vinyl did. True, I was hoping the unreleased album would be more of the same as the released one. It isn't quite as good, but still very much enjoyable to the same audience. Liner notes in the gatefold will give you a lot of band history to top off the package. Very recommended!
