Label/Format: London – original deep plum format with matt, smooth surfaces. Pressed by Decca.

Label Conditions: Both immaculate: very clean, fresh and highly attractive with barely a spindle trace to be seen. I doubt if a better UK copy of this highly elusive album will be found or offered.

Cat Number: SH-Z 8359.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A typical heavy top-quality Decca pressing.

Rarity: Rare: another near ‘lost’ UK pressing of a relatively obscure American psych band. They made two albums, but only this debut was pressed and issued in Britain. It would have sold in tiny numbers and few even made, this is seldom seen or offered outside the United States, and this beautiful record appears hardly even played and sounds little short of perfect. A rare opportunity for American pop-psych collectors.

Matrix Nos: ACZ-3082-2L / ACZ-3083-1L

Mothers / Stampers: 1 B / 1 B (an ultimate first pressing ‘B’ being the first in the pressing sequence of ‘BUCKINGHAM’). These are the most prized by discerning vinyl collectors and are seldom found, especially in such fantastic condition.

Musicians: Jack Bryant - vocals, bass, kazoo; Wally Cook - guitar; Howard Danchik - piano, flute, celeste; Jack Lauritsen - guitar, sitar, vibes; Richard Kumer - drums, percussion; Barry Seidel - effects, shoes, horns.

Brief Info: Hot on the heels of the MC5 from the same source, another somewhat ‘lost’ American UK-pressed classic. This was the 1968 debut album by The Fallen Angels, an American pop-psych band that never gained the exposure or popularity of the bigger, fairly similar and famous acts of the time. As bands like The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and The Doors et al. became household names, many similar orientated bands like this, fell by the wayside and were confined to obscurity, especially outside their native US. A little too ‘way-out’ for major commercial appeal, but apparently they were popular live and gave great shows. A tiny few such acts had albums pressed in the UK, but most sold poorly and were quickly withdrawn and deleted. So-much-so, the band’s second album, which many consider a classic, failed to get issue here at all. London-Decca clearly saw potential in The Fallen Angels, but made next to no impact here. Thus London originals seldom get seen or offered, a real shame as this album is now highly regarded and rare, US copies on Roulette less so. This a lovely copy and as you would expect, superbly pressed by Decca, it appears hardly even played and has little short of perfect sound. So another mini classic from the vaults has surfaced, few fans of this period will be disappointed, this my very first copy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: or very close to. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers all folds and ends on the back via the spine edge. The main back panel is matt and smooth finished. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press and includes the original blue Decca-style polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains very fine shine, freshness and clarity and has no lifting. Under light, a rim dull is seen which is rarely avoided on such thin card covers with thick records inside for decades. Some laminate creasing, but mostly fine and light with very modest visibility viewed full-on. A few fine marks only – a couple near the bottom edge are seen the most, but still light as seen on my picture – but little detracts from the splendid artwork that will prove difficult to find much better.

Cover Back: Lightly aged with gentle grubbiness or set-off around the edge areas. This mostly fine rim darkening, any real wear or blemishing minimal. Hardly any creasing at all to the main exposed card and even the laminate end clean. A very fine back to match the front’s visual quality.

Top Edge: Clean, smooth and straight with barely any wear and no bowing, that seldom avoided on Clairifoil laminated covers, this tends to shrink and pull (or lift) more than most.

Bottom Edge: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Very impressive: clean, very sharp with hardly any wear. Any thickening or burring bordering on minuscule and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. The fine exposed strip where the laminate ends naturally short barely worn at all.

Spine and Text: Solid, mostly straight with some compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate. A tiny few hairlines and centred a little low towards the bottom.

Corners: Minimal traces of tip rubbing, a little creasing in the general area of the bottom left, any other small and light. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this scarce 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better – it will not prove easy to find at all being honest. This attractive item that only gives modest hints of age, should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): in terms of real wear, hardly any. Just gently aged with minor discolour around the seam adhesive areas that is rarely avoided as a minimum. A Decca-style polylined inner, printed one side only. Two immaculate window circles and ultra clear, fresh lining and hardly any creasing. All edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): or better, this is as close to full Mint(–) as any late 1960s record I will offer would be. Just the merest hint of dulling from years being stored inside the inner sleeve, but no ‘bag rash’ as such. I doubt if this superb record has seen light-of-day for decades. A lovely visual copy that is very clean still with fine shine and quite heavily pressed on top quality Decca vinyl. A copy hardly even played on all the evidence and barely run-in in vinyl terms with any surface trace marks minuscule, even viewed critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality pop-psych album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from the UK’s premier manufacturer, Decca. Few copies will outperform this ultimate 1B/1B first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive album, another first for me. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
