Label/Format: Elektra – gold format with matt very gently textured surfaces. This has the deep ring ridge.

Label Conditions: Both in amazing condition, very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces minuscule. This record appears hardly played.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Very early American copies in this condition are rare, especially those found outside the United States. This in close to time capsule condition with a cover that looks like it just came out of its shrinkwrap. Even the inner sleeve reminds of new. Record hardly played and sounds superb. Most will know the wear American covers usually suffer, but when found like this, they are a thing of beauty, but rarely found as such.

Matrix Nos: EKS 74024 A-SON / EKS 74024 B-AL [there are several matrix detail variants for this album]

Muscians: Jim Morrison – lead vocals; Robby Krieger – lead guitar, rhythm guitar; Ray Manzarek – organ, piano, keyboard bass; John Densmore – drums. Occasional bass is played by Douglas Lubahn, Kerry Magness, Leroy Vinegar.

Brief Info: The Door’s third album and last available in both mono and stereo formats – this a superb American example in amazing condition. Another brilliant set, now with more variation and their reputation live made them popular. Personally, I prefer the stereo pressing of this album, it images brilliantly, and the song ‘Spanish Caravan’ has jaw-drop fidelity and separation. Morrison’s expressive vocals are magnificent throughout, what a vocalist this man was, so sadly lost at far too young. This a rare opportunity for a very early American copy in all-round outstanding condition. Few examples will even get close to this.

Cover Grade and Format: MINT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt smooth surfaces. Printed and made in the United States, the inside of the hinge has ‘UNIPAK - PAT PENDING’ text. Includes the gold and white Elektra inner sleeve also manufactured in the U.S.A.

Cover Front: I have rarely seen a 1960s American cover in this condition. Most will know how fragile and wear-prone these are. To find one that does come very close of reminding of new is some find outside the United States. This made even more delicate as the front is single thickness card and the record enters via the right of the centrefold. A front barely worn at all with superb deep colour and no creasing worthy of mention. Any blemishes are minuscule and I can hardly imagine any example outside of shinkwrap will better this.

Cover Back: A small crease to the top right corner, that probably natural in the fold, and a fine surface crease on the bottom right edge are the only tiny ‘blemishes’. Like the front, this even more wear-prone back is little short of immaculate. The total lack of rubbing is incredible, most seen have heavy, often total deep penetrating ring wear, this has nothing. Both front and back are amazing as seen in the pictures.

Cover Centrefold: Wow!, the black lizard side is stunning, again as seen in close-up with barely anything to fault. The pale left text side will rarely ever avoid set-off where the black surface ink opposite rests upon it when closed. But this has nothing more than minuscule traces. Even the fragile fold and it’s entrance area to the right is totally unworn or creased. A fantastic centre with both faces unaged and stunning.

Top Edges: Both straight and flat, not quite parallel, but reasonably close. Again unworn, the single card crisp and neat, the fold unrubbed or darkened. Not even a hint of movement stresses and no splits or course.

Bottom Edges: Virtually as above with any rub traces to the fold tiny and faint.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front is again very sharp and crisp with hardly a trace of thickening. The back folded edge is straight and totally unworn.

Spine and Text: A slight tilt to right is the very least to be expected for a single thickness spine, it has little else to fault. Solid and straight with barely any actual compression, the tile only very gentle. The graphic and text fully present and strong with no toning or fading, exactly as-seen. Any rub traces to the surface or folds again minuscule.

Corners: Any tip rubbing tiny with mostly better than excellent shape retained. Scant evidence of any dinks and again most can be considered outstanding.

Cover Summary: I almost had to pinch myself when first viewing this incredible cover. This truly in close to Factory Fresh condition and to date I have never seen one that has even come close, no matter where it was made. A thing of genuine beauty and a contender for one of the most amazing covers I have offered in my ‘Ebay’ career. This stunning item should please most-all fans and collectors – even the great Jim Morrison himself would have approved.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR MINT: even with a tiny fine single edge repair made by myself, this deserves nothing less as it looks immaculate. The fine split now intact and my neat repair barely even registers, and of course, it stops it getting wider in future. This has double outside flipback construction left and right and was not lined, both flipbacks solid and crisp. Both surfaces are amazingly clean and fresh with barely a crease to be seen. Not even a trace of rim impression or rubbing, this American-made company inner is unlikely to be seen better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): but in real terms better, this without doubt has hardly been played. American vinyl is ‘softer’ than European-made records with a tendency to mark more easily. Movement gentle surface scuffs and traces are near impossible to avoid on these vintage classics. Any on this record are few, fine, gentle and light as seen under bright light, totally superficial with no audio affect whatsoever. Hardly any ‘usage’ blemishes at all with no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with fine shine and very solidly pressed. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant psych-rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises – that a crucial factor on any record, but this I know does have them sometimes, but not here. Many vinyl connoisseurs regard American pressings for American bands and artists to be the finest available, and this certainly is a very impressive copy for condition and audio quality. Few available copies will match, let outperform this early US pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly, if indeed hardly at all and has been expertly stored. I doubt if it had been out of the cover for decades and certainly carefully handled. Remember, this album was actually purchased and released when the iconic singer Jim Morrison was still with us, and just holding this gem gives immense satisfaction. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove beyond difficult to find better – American copies especially – and merits my highest recommendation. This a very rare opportunity.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
