BEATLES WEIRD LP    


It’s said that this was the first time that the Beatles had their copyrights violated in America, and it was in 1964, at the height of the first wave of Beatlemania.

At the time, their records were being pressed up by a variety of companies; Vee Jay, Tollie, Capitol, Swan, MGM, Atco, and it seemed like open season. Some pressing plant back on the East Coast ran up these albums which contained tracks that were legally licensed to all of those labels, just not to the Greatest Records label.

They were careful to not put the Beatles name on the jacket anywhere but they did use some silhouettes which clearly tried to cash in. Many probably thought it was a sound-alike group, but alas, it’s the Beatles themselves.

Of note on this album is that the version of “Love Me D” on this album is the mix with Ringo on drums, and that this version was found on U.K. and Canadian singles in 1964.

As you might imagine, Capitol Records stopped distribution of the album almost immediately after it hit the stores, so it’s quite rare.
