Label/Format: Apple – original dark surface mono with matt finish, a gentle hint of texturing.

Label Conditions: Both fresh and clean with hardly a spindle mark to be seen. However, side two has a couple of small (one being tiny), surface pulls. Three even tinier spots are NOT pulls, but tiny print imperfections on the dark rim. I am near certain the two pulls were present from new. Side one label is superb, but the blemishes may be an issue for perfectionists. I will quickly add, this is a superb example in most-all other respects, including sound, and there is nothing more important for me than that. As most collectors will know, this was the final Beatles album issued in mono, for those who still chose the single channel mode, did so to play on the appropriate equipment. That meaning it is considerably harder to find in decent condition compared to the stereo. Both record, cover and even the fragile black inner sleeve are highly impressive and this one appears hardly played – the best news possible of course.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 149 grams. A very impressive weight.

Rarity: This is one of the scarcer original, standard Beatles albums – that I will seldom state as most-all of their albums sold in massive numbers. As stated, this was the last original Beatles album made available in mono. Conditions are always the paramount factor for Beatles albums, most who bought them played them heavily, and often on the most basic of record players. All vinyl fans and collectors will have seen worn-out, trashed examples of most of their 1960s records, regularly cover in swathes of grubby fingermarks, deep penetrating scratches and the grooves caked in debris and grime. I will never offer any record like that, what is the point? Finding any mono record that appears hardly played is always the best news possible, and all evidence strongly suggests this has received little. It offers lovely clean sound, including the far more difficult orchestral side with little unwanted. The cover is equally impressive – that too is so often not the case – many dulled, creased, torn and often with writing plastered all over them. Well my pictures do not lie, this is a really nice and aged little. For good measure, the ultra fragile black inner sleeve is superb and is UNSPLIT, these are immensely difficult to find like this. So although this record – predictably – sold well, there seems far less monos around, and few will survive in much better condition that will come on to the open market.

Brief Info: The movie was animated and very psychedelic – the album features SIX wonderful Beatles songs on side one, four being previously unreleased – side two is the original film score which was composed and orchestrated by George Martin, this side I feel vastly under-appreciated. The six Beatles songs are superb, all will know the title song of course. I have heard several copies of this one where the pressing quality is somewhat variable especially on the orchestrated side, often as later pressings but this rarer mono copy does high justice. The cover has the correct PMC 7070 number (as seen in close-up) and those two red bands on the back which were soon dropped. A very fine all-round copy with a little aged cover and a very clean record, the inner sleeve exceptional. A couple of small label flaws, but hardly major and this a copy that is sure to please many, if not most collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): only a small bottom right corner rubs stops a higher grade. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and unprotected. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse. A true ‘Mono’ cover with the correct prefix and those red horizontal lines as only featuring on the earliest examples whether mono or stereo. This includes the often elusive correct one open window hole black inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Lovely psychedelic cartoon artwork that most will be more than familiar with. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and barely even a hint of dulling, even viewed under angled light. Most of the very few laminate creases are fine and light. Just a small rub to the bottom right corner tip, the most vulnerable on any cover, but barely any detracts from what is a fantastic looking front.

Cover Back: With the two horizontal parallel red lines, this is a guaranteed original mono cover, these details were soon removed as most collectors will know. The back as aged litte with any discolouration to the exposed main panel minimal and very light indeed. This has no creasing or rubbing and few will survive much better. The three flipbacks are all solid and incredibly neat with little to fault at all. All ends are devoid of grime or burring – one tiny nick near the bottom right being beyond critical. These vintage Beatles covers are seldom seen a great deal better than this.

Top Edge: Very clean, smooth and quite straight, no scuffs or wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Same again with just the tip rub on the very right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, fairly sharp with any thickening or burring light and minimal. , this as mainly seen viewed end-on. The record enters here and is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Little short of perfect: solid, straight with barely any compression – the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. All very clear and white with no toning or scuffs. The text being perfect and unworn under the fresh, solid and very smooth laminate.

Corners: Three of the four are in superb condition with barely anything to fault. The fourth being the bottom right has a smallish rub on the front. Excellent or better shape retained on others.

Cover Summary: When I state the ‘biggest’ issue is a small corner tip rub, it should tell you this is a super example of this rarer original mono sleeve. Hardly aged or worn, this indeed could prove a substantial upgrade for many. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): an immensely fragile soft paper inner that is massively prone to tearing, splitting and wooliness. This was not lined and is rarely seen devoid of major edge splits and torn window. This is made with very soft, matt paper, the same type found in the ‘White Album’ and some other Apple albums so beware of similiar black inners being substituted. Unusually, this is fully intact and has a neat window, just the one on this design. In terms of wear, this has hardly any at all, and, almost remarkably, this has NO splits, tears of repairs. One fairly gentle corner semi-crease only and retaining an unusual freshness and close to as-made look. The edges have totally avoided rubbing or weakening, thus no wooliness to paper that seldom avoids it. This integral part of set will rarely be seen better either.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: side two even better. A popular mono record that retains very fine shine and is heavily pressed. Any surface marks are mostly fine and faint as seen under bright angled light, there are no penetrating scratches and sound quality is impressive. Not visually pristine for perfectionists, but compared to many mono records of similar popularity, this is very nice indeed. It will please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This scarcer early-pressed mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. That includes the very challenging and difficult side two. Complex orchestral music and the associated jagged and finer grooves, are even more intolerant of heavy stylus abuse from early equipment, hence just a few plays on the most basic record players of the time can almost make them sound unlistenable. Only a full-play grade will confirm fine clean sound – guess-work offers nothing – groovewear and distortion is the hidden peril of the grammophone record. This early cut copy has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Side two is fragile: just think of those super-heavyweight old thick needles dragging themselves across this fragile recording. The details and dynamics of the earliest pressings will amaze anyone who has yet to experience it - still the choice of so many Beatles fans. As a note: this was the last Fab Four album issued on the mono channel format and it does present the music differently. Any surface sounds on this copy are minimal indeed and silence on arguably the most difficult Beatles album is near impossible, especially in mono. But few available copies will match or outperform this very pressing significantly I feel certain. The ‘Beatles’ side plays with impressive clean sound and was a real joy, the instrumental side coming in close too. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has avoided arm drops or jolts, the surface marks are superficial mild and non-sounding with no tracking issues*. When viewed in normal room light, little is even seen anyway. A stereo Linn LP12 is a harsh and critical front end to play vintage mono records, they were not really designed for such equipment, but when clean enought, they really do sound special. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove difficult, even very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
