Label/Format: Parlophone – ‘First’ press format with matt, very gently textured surfaces. As seen, this has the ‘Jobete’ credit for the final song ‘Money’. Also in small type at the 9 o’clock position, the text ‘RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1963’ and ‘THE PARLOPHONE CO LTD’ rim text. No ‘SOLD IN UK etc’. These labels are recognised as 1963 pressings with all other parts of the set the same – full information on all further down.

Label Conditions: Both in gorgeous condition, being very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, quite fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. In vintage Beatles terms, there are only few and they hardly show, hardly any go out of the inner ring. Both sides sees the type and logo perfectly focused and crisp, this pair (and the record itself) look very little handled and simply blow away their huge age. Early days in this listing – but I can state, this record plays with truly STUNNING sound that is little short of perfect.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 143 grams. A typical heavyweight record made in the golden-era of vinyl quality.

Rarity: I will seldom state any standard Beatles album is rare – most sold in massive numbers. But I will make an exception for a 1963 pressed stereo copy of this album. And even more so with a record that appears only very lightly played and offering truly immaculate sound – this record, put simply – blew me away. This being played, as all my records are, on a very revealing system (all listed further down). This was the era of the mono record, and few bar early audiophile purists even considered or owned stereo record players, which, in the UK especially, were still in their relative infancy. Mono copies sold in massive numbers, stereos far, far less, and how many will still play with nigh-on perfect sound over 50 years on? This is an outstanding record, the playing surfaces hardly marked, any blemishes are minuscule with NO penetrating stylus marks at all. No pops, no clicks and the stereo separation stunning with ultimate clarity and focus. Indeed this disc could prove a near ultimate upgrade for many needing a top stereo copy. The vintage cover has small marks on the spine edge near the bottom, but other than that, little else in terms of marks. Even the correct polylined inner sleeve is near immaculate. But the star of this set is the record and it’s magnificent sound, this sends shivers down the spine and the Fab Four sound in the room – it really IS that good. Such copies are rare, make no mistake.

Brief Info: The band’s second album, it sold in vast numbers in mono, so-much-so, some covers and records were contracted out simply to meet demand. Stereo copies are a much different story, and seen far less often than most worn-out monos that, quite honestly are common. Most will be more than familiar with this hugely popular album, I will concentrate on the conditions and exactly what is on offer.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: but looks better, only marked down for small marks as mentioned on the spine edge near the bottom as seen in close-up. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges on to three very large external rear flipbacks. This has the large ‘stereo’ on the front, printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. Includes the polylined ‘Emitex’ inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: Firstly, the marks on the left edge at the bottom, are only very small and show little. This vintage cover has survived the years very well and looks impressive. These marks, indeed could be in manufacture – having been in the print trade for 35 years, I know what finishing and machine gripper marks look like, and as these marks align both sides with the same number (three), these could be purely natural blemishes. The laminate retains excellent shine, fine freshness and clarity with no lifting, any creasing very few and only fine and light. A hint of discolour on the white areas which few can hope to avoid, but this gives a 50+year-old cover character and vintage that many collectors desire and enjoy. Note the large ‘stereo’ on the top right, this only seen on the first issue sleeves.

Cover Back: The unprotected main back panel is superb with little to fault and more than complements the impressive front. Still clean, white and fresh, barely marked with no rubbing or creases. The flipbacks have all aged more with darkening which is quite a normal trait of white card that is laminated. The three marks near the bottom corner on the spine flipback show more, but are hardly major, and with little else in terms of visual imperfections present, will many be found much better? Only the bottom flipback end has a strip exposed, this still being largely clean with only small, light hints of toning or darkening, the laminate covers the other two fully. All are solidly adhered with minimal thickening to the ends, traces on the bottom one only. The protected imprint text is pristine and includes ‘Patents pending’ text as seen in close-up. So not perfect with hints of age on the flipbacks and the smallish marks, but mighty impressive nonetheless.

Top Edge: Straight and smooth, just a couple of tiny chips seen viewed end-on.

Bottom Edge: Even better, this storage edge totally smooth and unscuffed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both these entrance edges are again in super condition and are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way. Still sharp and crisp with no feathering or softening of the card. Any hint of thickening or burring minuscule for a cover this fantastic age.

Spine and Text: A super spine: very solid and straight with barely any compression. All text is pristine mint perfect, also beautifully centred on the fairly narrow depth as seen again in close up. The laminate is smooth and fully intact with no scuffs, just a tiny rub to the bottom corner.

Corners: The corners are very crisp and neat, any tip rubbing tiny with no knocks or dinks. Excellent or better shape retained with barely even a tip crease – so rare on popular albums this age.

Cover Summary: Even with small visual blemishes, possibly natural, but that not definitive, this is a quality and attractive cover with only mild clues of age. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): this very early record has the thicker heavy-duty polylined inner sleeve with the ‘PATENTS APPLIED FOR’ text. It correctly promotes the use of the ‘Emitex’ cleaning cloth. Like the main cover, this has aged little and remains fully intact, clean and fresh. Both window circles are immaculate and the lining still clear and fresh, importantly intact as well. Barely creased with all edges unsplit with NO repairs or enhancements. The top opening is recessed, neat and crisp as well and this vintage inner will prove difficult to find better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): any surface marks or blemishes very few and light, as seen under bright angled light. I never grade my records in normal daylight, that is simply not good enough to see fine and super-fine surface traces. Instead I use a very powerful reflector table lamp that hides nothing – arguably too clinical, but that is how it should be. A quite superb example of a massively popular Beatles record. Very few fare this well and a high percentage simply written-off by primitive stylus or vast usage. This a lovely visual copy that is very clean with equally impressive shine and freshness. Intense black and heavily pressed. There are NO penetrating scratches, hence this record plays with no pops or clicks, few can state that especially when played on a critically revealing Linn LP12 sondek. Yes stereo copies usually survive better than monos, but compared to modern equipment, record players were still (mainly) quite basic and tracked heavy. Clearly this has been played very lightly and I would strongly suggest with due care. For looks and sound, this super stereo original will take a lot of beating.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very special stereo Parlophone record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering spine-tingling and strong, distortion-free sound – never take this for granted on any vintage popular record, and few, if any, were more popular than The Beatles. This is a high energy and intense recording with full-on loud sound that is even more susceptible of old ‘needle’ abuse. Even pristine looking copies can hide dreaded distortion caused by a blunt or chipped stylus, the curse of the 1960 record. Here, all frequencies are pin-sharp and clear - sound quality is immense with a wide dynamic range, incredible separation and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Stating the obvious, this delivers the music to the listener in a very different way to the more familiar mono. A very forward, loud and dynamic recording, this simply sounds stunning with any surface sounds barely even registering with no pops or clicks heard. A top quality pressing – would you expect anything else?, and unruined by abuse or heavy usage. This record really made by LP12 excel, spine-tingling clarity and sonic delivery of all those classic songs. Very few available copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, and within a smoke-free home. No needle drops or jolts have scarred or ruined this beautifully preserved copy. I can hardly reiterate enough that only small percentage of Beatles and beat-pop albums of this era survive quite this little used and unabused. Most are tired, well played copies that were enjoyed a multitude of times and now rendered unlistenable on modern, ultra revealing equipment. Classic ‘party-pieces’, often with names plastered on labels and covers, all avoided here. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, one of the very best of the early-era Beatles albums that could hardly be produced fast enough to meet the demand of the record-buying public of the day – but those in mono. Very much the mono era – stereo copies are elusive and purchased by few at time of issue. Bring back the memories and early sound of the Fab Four – here in glorious and more unusual stereo, with this impressive and massively enjoyable set.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
