Label Conditions: All four very clean, fresh and attractive. This 1978 UK pressing was only played once by the one-and-only previous owner. Now played twice for my mandatory sound-check. Just one light spindle mark on sides 1 and 3. A tiny adhesion crinkle in manufacture on side 3 near the rim, it shows little.

Cat Number: PCS 7067/8.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 122 / 115 grams. Late 1970s pressings were always lighter, and these quite typical.

Rarity & Detail: Like all Beatles albums, this sold in vast numbers. To find a now twice only played copy from 1978 (this proven by the two pristine mirror-inage inner sleeve date codes, as seen in close-up) is probably harder than finding even a moderately played original. A set all quite similar to the 1968 issue except for a few details. The main cover omits any number on the front and has no inside flipbacks. Also the records are stored on the right edges rather than the top. The fragile black inners are replaced by EMI white inners and the labels have a lighter graphic. All what is included is described below.

Brief Info: Firstly, I have no qualms in offering a twice played 1978 of this Beatles classic. With only a few cosmetic differences, this impressive set will fit the bill of many vinyl collectors who do not wish to spend a king’s ransom on a near mint original – and that would be the likely scenario. Few available originals will play this cleanly either, most seen trashed, damaged or incomplete and offering less than pleasing sound. Most fans will know all about this album already, so I will not waste time, I will simply describe what is included and the relevant conditions.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): this being quite critical. A fully laminated (NOT varnished) gatefold format and still with the embossed ‘The BEATLES’ on the front. The inside text and graphics just the same as the original minus the flipbacks. Also, the spine has reference to the mono and stereo version. Entrance for the records is now via the right edges. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse International Ltd. The set includes the large double-sided poster (printed in Germany), four colour portrait cards of the band, and both the EMI white inner sleeves that are both mirror-image design. Both date-coded 978 (September, 1978 as seen in close-up.

Cover Laminate – Front & Back: Both sides retain very shiny, fresh and clear laminate with barely any hint of any dulling and no hard creases at all. This one still a lovely white, not yellowed, toned or aged – a cover never exposed to nicotine or any smoker’s environment, this makes a huge difference of course. The front is little short of immaculate with just a couple of gentle crinkles to the bottom edge around where the record rests, any actual impression is minimal and the exposed fine strip on the right side where the laminate ends short of full width, ultra clean and wear-free. The totally plain white back is largely the same with just a couple of fine press marks and a tiny lift trace near the bottom right corner. Both these outer faces will prove hard to find much better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is immaculate and I had to photograph each side separately as this is so fresh, it will not open must above half way without breaking that tight uncracked laminate on the centre hinge. This has high resistance and ‘spring’ with a deep crackle when opening – practically like new in that respect. Most will flop open with the centre laminate broken or even peeled, this is practically as made and gives that reassuring sound and feel of being so – that rare initself.

Top Edges: These are both closed as the records enter on the right edges. Both unworn and super-smooth to the fingertip.

Bottom Edges: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both are very impressive: crisp and sharp with minimal traces of any thickening or burring. There ends clean with no grime-line formation. The records enter on these edges that are both guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Apart from the odd trace of crinkle, probably there in manufacture from day one, this spine is as impressive as the rest of the cover. One that never wears well and this is little different from the original with all the mono and stereo information. Total laminate coverage, intact with NO flaking or peeling, or even cracking. All the text is fully present and unworn, also for a change, this is still very white and untoned or aged.

Corners: All crisp, pointed with barely any hint of wear and NO dinks.

Cover Summary: Even these 1970s White Album covers are seldom seen this nice. With barely any real wear and any blemishes few and faint, this will prove difficult to find much better. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: MINT(-): a mirror-image pair both with the date-code 978 (September, 1978). These white unlined EMI inners are little short of as-made with no edge splits (or repairs), noteworthy creasing or ageing. These replaced the black inners of the original that are rarely seen untorn, split and damaged.

The Poster: EXCELLENT(++): a very conservative grading for an unmounted (no pin holes or tape marks) and very clean poster that has little evidence of ageing or handling. Printed both sides with a matt finish, this one on quite heavy thick paper in Germany – lyrics on one and band graphics on the other. Three manufactured folds, two horizontal and one vertical, these are solid and unsplit. Barely any creasing – the odd small tip one or two only – and all edges crisp. This large poster will not be easy to find much better and is pretty much the same as the originals.

George Harrison Portrait Card: EXCELLENT(+): all the pictures are the same format and guaranteed original, having a semi-gloss sheen and made with reasonably thin card. Colour density can vary a little from example to example, but all should be pretty similar – ALL four are unmounted e.g. NO pin holes or tape marks. Firstly, the back. Clean and still very white. No set-off or toning, this has barely aged at all and looks impressive. The only blemish is a small mark near his right ear, that apart immaculate.

John Lennon Portrait Card: EXCELLENT: very similar to George with just a light semi-crease near the collar region, any marks few and faint, the odd trace of grubbiness on the back being very critical.

Paul McCartney Portrait Card: EXCELLENT(+): similar again, a faint semi-crease near the bottom left corner, it shows little as does one ultra fine hairline surface mark trace.

Ringo Starr Portrait Card: MINT(-): close to as made, with barely anything to fault bar the odd faint hairline.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) to MINT(-): a superb visual pair with any surface traces tiny, fwe and faint. A copy now played just twice, the second being my mandatory play-grade sound check. Two fresh, clean and shiny records, barely run-in in vinyl terms and little short of as made.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their high visual grading with little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – a trace of gentle crackle noted in the odd place on ‘Mother Natures’s Son’ but little else. Not really sure why, but anything is light and brief and there are few other reminders you a listening to a record rather and a squeaky clean digital format. No pops or clicks were noted and overall a very clean pressing for a challenging album that has moments of great volume and then quietness. Again, most will know about the content of this evergreen classic. Few copies will outperform this 1978 pressing significantly I feel sure. With so many earlier copies rendered unlistenable, there is little to fault on this barely played Apple pair. Clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these lovely records. For those who simply want a mostly very clean vinyl copy with all the pieces in lovely fresh condition without shelling out a small fortune on an original – this is not just a compromise – it just makes perfect sense. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
