Description
I've always thought of the Mobile Fidelity box set The Beatles: The Collection as the crown jewel of my record collection, partly because it's a much-sought-after piece, but mainly because in my opinion the half-speed mastering--especially of the earlier material--sounds so great. The Collection consists of all of The Beatles' British albums from Please Please Me to Let It Be, plus Yellow Submarine and Magical Mystery Tour.
The outer box is structurally sound and in nice condition overall, but has enough imperfections to warrant only a VG+ rating. The bottom of the box is padded, but as one would expect, the pad is a bit worn, especially at the corners. Overall wear of the visible upper surfaces is not that extensive, though the metal door hinges and latch have tarnished over time (the latch more than the hinges), and there's a bit of separation of the cardboard at the bottom of one of the doors. The most noticeable imperfection is a crack on the top of the box, apparently from being hit by a heavy object at some point before I purchased the box used from a long-out-of-business record store. I've included a photo of the imperfection, and to give you a sense of scale, from the m to the e in "master" is about 1-3/4 inches.
As for the individual album covers, I think many people would consider them to be in near-mint condition. However, if you look closely you'll notice that the way the covers are constructed/folded has led to some very slight fraying of the upper and lower left-hand corners. In addition, close inspection also reveals a little bit of barely noticeable wear on the bottom seams. Other than those two minor imperfections, the covers look great. One unique feature of the album covers you can't help but notice is that they don't reproduce the original cover art. Instead they consist of photos of the master tape boxes with the song titles and other information written on them. However, the original album art is reproduced in the 40-page booklet that comes with the box set. The box also includes a Geo-Disc cartridge alignment "system," the cover of which has two noticeable wear lines on the front cover, along with a little bit of wear elsewhere.
Imperfections in the box and covers aside, though, the most important fact is that all 14 vinyl records are in beautiful near-mint condition.
SELLER’S NOTE: It’s taken a long time to get to this point, but thanks to hundreds of satisfied buyers, the records that I have listed on Ebay right now are the very last titles from my once-large collection. Sadly, once these records are gone, I have no more to sell.
