Here, you get what you pay for – SAFE PACKING in BOXES using 7mm DOUBLE-WALL STIFFENERS including full side protection and bubble wrap, the records removed from the covers of course. All this very safe packing means I lose money on every box I post, but safe delivery is, and will always be paramount. You WILL see the difference when my packet arrives. Also, I will pay for insurance on any record that sells for over £100 at NO extra cost – that is UK and abroad. Also I aim to post the very same day after payment is received if possible. PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT send any item, no matter what its value without a Royal Mail or courier tracking number. ALL my items must be signed and trackable to comply with Ebay delivery rules. Please do NOT ask me to make any exceptions to this rule as no country offers 100% reliable service without it.

SPECIAL NOTE: The Side two label omits the final song ‘A Day in the Life’ which is a catalogued known variant, such a substantial error on a Beatles album being a significant and major rarity. Only a small run of these were issued before the error was spotted and quickly corrected. Be clear, the record still plays the song, but the label is rarely seen with this considerable error. Highly collectable and sort-after for Beatles specialist collectors, these do not surface too often, and even more so on a record that still plays beautifully.

Label Conditions: Both clean, still fresh and attractive with light / moderate spindle marks. This unbanded mono record plays very impressively and has suffered no mishaps or abuse.

Warps or Lateral Movement: Assume all records I offer have no significant warping or lateral movement to cause sound or tracking issues. All should play fine even on budget turntables.

Rarity: Moderate in terms of units sold. However, copies that will offer impressive, clean mono sound are far more elusive. And this copy with the major label error omitting the final song in the track listing, makes it a significant rarity.

Brief Info: Arguably, the world’s most famous popular music album and cover. It’s concept and sound broke new ground in recorded music and even today, it has hardly aged at all. Most will know the album well enough. The copy on offer here is a very fine early mono copy with lovely sound, cover, insert and graphic inner sleeve. Importantly for collectors, it has the rare label error that emits the final in the tracking listing as seen in close-up.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better with most surfaces worthy of one or two extra pluses. A fully laminated gatefold format with the standard inverted text spine. The inside has two wide flipbacks on the top. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the graphic inner sleeve, picture insert sheet.

Lamination – Front & Back: A really lovely looking front, and what sets it apart from many if the depth of colour of the artwork. The famous graphic looks superb with its deep, rich and vibrant colour as this one offers – many examples are much paler – so-much-so, I almost consider them to vary enough to be considered variants. It simply depends on which run of print they were made on, but the colour can, and does vary considerably. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with minimal dulling and no lifting, any of the tiny few surfaces minimal and faint. Cover-protected from new by one owner, this famous front sets a high standard.

The back has a tiny laminate chip on the left edge and a mere couple of faint half moons away from the edges. Light dulling is seen in places around the rim area under light – with thick quite heavy record inside all these years, few will avoid that as a minimum. A gentle fine lift on the left of the bottom edge which is minimal, this the only lift on the cover. Still attractive again with a deep, vibrant shade of red.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The two entire surfaces beneath the flipback ends is new flawless with the laminate very shiny and super clear, the graphic again very deep in colour. Both flipbacks on this example are very wide, and again they do vary, both are little short of pristine. These have a tendency to stick and pull the surface on their laminate ends, but this has been totally avoided and there is no grubbiness line formation. Not only that, this one has the laminate on the actual fold still intact and tight. So this cover still has some hinge ‘spring’ and fresh creak when opened. It does not flop open to silence like most these days, hence taking the centrefold picture, the cover does lie totally flat. No way I was going to force it only to break that rare tight inside hinge laminate. Small differences like this are the difference between higher quality and mediocre.

Top Edges: Both straight, smooth, flat and flush with barely any hint of wear. No curl at all on the right ends, that quite unusual.

Bottom Edges: As above.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both naturally open, all four edges show hardly any thickening.

Spine and Text: Generally still solid, straight with some natural compression. Folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. A notorious standard spine that will quickly form a central recess purely on opening, often shedding much, or even all its laminate. The recess will cause the text to sink and this has occured here, but its near impossible to avoid unless never opened. Here, all the text lettering is present and the laminate mostly present and solidly intact with any loss minimal. This typically average spine the reason for the quite conservative overall grading.

Corners: Slight and small corner wear on the bottom left, little else with the right four especially very impressive with mostly better than excellent shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong and striking all-round example of this very famous 1960’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. This beautiful item with its rich colour graphics should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: another fragile part of this set, this unlined thin paper graphic inner sleeve is very hard to find neat and without often heavy edge splits and tears. Even prone to ring wear and rubbing, this has hardly anything like that and remains clean and still fresh. Only marked down to excellent for two neat bottom right corner creases. All three edges are naturally intact and few these days still are. Not all Peppers includes this inner, some just had a plain white one instead, but of course, always best to have this far more interesting one. Overall, this will prove difficult to find much better or more solidly intact, even the top entrance edges are neat and still crisp with no tears. It was phased out altogether when the label format changed at the end of the decade, so these inners are not as common as you may think – especially this nice.

The Graphic Insert: NEAR MINT: included in all pressings of this album as far as I know. A card insert printed on one side, the reverse side is a plain grey colour. Again, this has deep colour, and yes, these also vary considerably, this is uncreased and still very clean. Few early examples will be found better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with played a few times, but with due care on a quality record player with any surface marks very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. Importantly, no penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, little even registers. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare label error record plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Few available copies will outperform this early mono pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system. Generally well stored and carefully handled with in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic record. It could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
