The tremendous success of the Beatles in 1964 led to numerous repackagings of their material by the independent labels that had taken a chance on them early on when Capitol, their nominal American label, initially passed on its option in 1963. While it still controlled American rights to the Beatles' first album, Please Please Me, which it had issued in abridged form as Introducing The Beatles in 1963, Vee Jay now released a slightly different abridgement [WE WOULD SAY: REPACKAGING, NOT ABRIDGMENT: IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME ALBUM, BUT WITH THE DIFFERENT COVER -- OP.ED] under the title Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles. ("Ask Me Why" and "Please Please Me" were restored, and "Love Me Do" and "P.S. I Love You" deleted). This was the same version they had released only 11 days earlier as one-half of The Beatles Vs. The Four Seasons.
***
Who would have thought 55 years ago that an album by the four obscure Brits from a run-down port city where God said good night and fare-thee-well would make such a cataclysmic impact on the world of Rock music - actually music, in general - and become one of the record collectors' most coveted prizes? Well, here it is, in all its glory, the very first pressing of this album. Or, let me rephrase myself: THE GENUINE first pressing of this album, in mono, repackaged as "Songs, Pictures and Stories of the Fabulous Beatles" with the legendary 8-inch fold-over gatefold cover. This is the 100% genuine, black, glossy Vee Jay label with a color spectrum band along the perimeter of the label, from 1964…if you are still not persuaded, wait until you hear the sound: raw, punchy, intense, driven mono sound that cannot possibly be confused for bootleg!!!) What makes this piece even more desirable is the cover: the legendary gatefold cover with one side shorter than the other (the classic 8-inch fold-over cover - please see the image of the cover shown below) A piece of history, not to be missed.

· CONDITION:
· RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(c) The record comes in a poly-lined inner sleeve, which has - apparently with success - shielded the vinyl from the harmful impact of elements over many years!
(d) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· COVER (this is the original “GIMMICK” cover)
THE COVER IS ABOUT VERY GOOD+(+)
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 4
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging. Yellowing is also noted on the INSIDE gatefold
- Cover has tiny, almost invisible, pinholes (or staple holes) in one corner (two on the front panel, four on the back). These tiny holes are NOT cutout holes.
- Visible shelf wear noted on the seams
- Cover has all four corners slightly worn (nothing significant)
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (BARELY VISIBLE)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
