Label & Format: Parlophone – matt surfaces with a very gentle hint of texturing. This has meets the criteria of a standard ‘first’ format – ‘Sold in UK…’ and ‘Gramophone Co Ltd’ text. Embossed ‘K T’ tax codes on side two. Both letters superb and totally unworn.

Label Conditions: Both in beautiful condition as seen. Very clean, fresh and attractive with only two or three small, faint spindle marks. I have rarely seen an early mono copy of this album with less evidence of usage.

Rarity: Most standard issue Beatles albums are not rare (with a few exceptions), condition always remains the most important factor and I will rarely, if ever offer Beatles albums less than what I deem Excellent. Heavily worn and played copies are easy to find, especially in mono. Hardly played, very clean examples are getting increasingly difficult to find.

Brief Artist & Album Info: For many, one of the greatest albums in popular music history. What can I add to any description that has not been said a million times before? I will simply state this is a superb still quite early example that looks impressive and plays the same. A standard, and correct UK mono copy (NOT the alternative mix ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ version) that appears hardly played (in Beatles terms, that is bordering on remarkable). For fans and collectors wanting a standard early issue, this should more than fit the fill.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. This covers the folds and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse, includes the sepia promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: One of the most famous covers in popular music history and this one looks very impressive. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting and any creasing very little and equally light, importantly confined to edges, so the stunning graphic still looks exactly that – stunning. A quite gentle press mark seen to the left of Ringo’s nose, it registers little. The same goes for any dulling, a trace near the top edge viewed under angled light. Even the exposed right edge card where the laminate ends naturally short is unworn and clean. A truly beautiful front that has hardly aged at all, this will prove very difficult to find better and does this groundbreaking album cover nigh-on maximum justice.

Cover Back: The back clearly is more vulnerable, but again this has totally blown away its considerable age and again looks fantastic. One light press mark on a totally black area again registers little, and there is hardly anything else to really fault. There is minor handling traces to the revealing matt black panel, the lack of rubbing and ring wear always great news. The three flipbacks are in remarkable condition as well with barely even a hairline crease to the laminate on them. All are solid with no end burring, lifting or even grubbiness to the laminate ends. Even the laminate retains superb shine with barely any trace of yellowing or ageing. An exceptional back to match the front, rarely seen as such these days.

Top and Bottom Edges: The top very straight, the bottom almost the same. Both surfaces ultra smooth with no chips or scuffs at all. Unaged again and very clean.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and still quite sharp, the G&L trim was more ‘rustic’ and naturally less sharp than the E. J. Day version. Minimal thickening, even viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is untrimmed or enhanced as the still quite wide exposed strip on the front emphasises.

Spine and Text: Little short of perfect bar the gentlest hint of corner end bowing that few will avoid totally, an almost natural trait on these laminated vintage covers. Very solid, and quite straight with minimal hint of any compression. The ends are gently pinched. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate that has avoided scuffs or cracking, almost the entire surface is smooth to the fingertip.

Corners: The corners are also of the highest quality with barely anything to fault. No wear worthy of mention and totally devoid of bashes or dinks, they are rarely seen like this.

Cover Summary: Made in the era of quality, this is a work-of-art with robust construction. It gives scant clues to age, this has clearly been cover-protected almost from new and looks gorgeous. One to please many, if not most collectors, indeed, it could prove a huge upgrade for many Beatles collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the sepia unlined promotional inner is also in quality condition and very little aged like most seen. Any toning, paper darkening or creasing minimal and light. No edge splits or repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): with any surface traces ultra fine and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. NO penetrating scratches and any visual blemishes purely superficial, this is a mono classic in almost remarkable condition. It plays beautifully throughout with hardly anything unwanted – the odd gentle tick near impossible to avoid. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. Without doubt, this has been played very little at all and suffered no abuse or sound degrading. In Beatles terms, they are seldom seen this lightly used and certainly unabused. Most of these were heavily played and often trashed from being loaned-out or wrecked by very heavy tracking record players of the time. Few vintage mono Beatles albums these days are worth a second look with most being played to near destruction. I would be more than delighted if all 1960s mono records looked this fine. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors – such examples are at far more of a premium.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This evergreen classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, very clear and focused sound – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Another masterclass of engineering and production by George Martin with incredible detail and audio quality. Any surface sounds hardly even registered, this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. I play all my albums on one of the world’s most revealing and critical turntables, a Linn LP12 for which these vintage mono records were not really designed. Little escapes its clinical presentation and gleaning of groove information, and few copies will ever not reveal the odd blemish when played on this and similar equipment. I am certain this record has been played little and with due care, the avoidance of scratches on mono records is crucial, without any doubt whatsoever, this has been very well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful album. It is highly likely to prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended for many, if not most fans and collectors. One to play and enjoy almost to the maximum, this was a genuine joy.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
