Front cover:

Manufactured by Garrard & Lofthouse.  This example is a G & L sleeve and has the words "TRADE MARK OF THE GRAMOPHONE CO. LTD." under the Parlophone logomark, the E. J. Day sleeve does not. In the original photo taken for the cover, there is a loose thread on right shoulder of John's jacket. This was airbrushed out on most covers in the U.K.

Inner Sleeve

Tracing-rice-paper-lined “Use Emitex” die-cut sleeve

Differs from (and is superior in the view of many) the matrix"-1 (one)" cuttings of the mono UK "Rubber Soul" - the so-called "Loud Cut." Following the album's release, the EMI cutting engineers were requested to cut down on the bass, since early buyers complained of skipping needles due to mistracking.
Early first-pressing copies were pressed with loud mixing version (whose inner groove says XEX 579-1 and XEX 580-1). This second press is the rectified version that follows the 1/1 matrices.

Grading notes:

Vinyl: EX - EXCELLENT (PLEASE SEE BELOW).

Nice and crisp. Barely played. Lovely sheen. Deep gloss playing surface. Aside from very faint removal marks, no visual blemishes. One visible sign of needlewear in the play-out groove of side two - this occurs AFTER the end of the record, however and is inaudible. No significant groove or play wear. Lies flat and true on the turntable. Nice warm analogue sound. Only the very faintest static evident during the quieter passages.

Sleeve: EX(-). Original Garrod & Lofthouse sleeve. Generally crisp and clean. Sleeve has very minimal wear. Very minor shelf wear. Light edgewear. Some rubbing and slight yellowing/foxing commensurate with age to the rear panel - laminate is intact and blemish free: generally bright and unworn. Some very faint feathering at opening. Spine is crisp and unflattened - slightly yellowed - and the text is clear and bold.

Inner sleeves: original "Use EMITEX" printed rice paper-lined inner.

Labels: Clean. Light rubbing to side 2. Only very light spindle marks or signs of any play.

VERY GOOD: THE RECORD HAS OBVIOUSLY BEEN PLAYED MANY TIMES, BUT DISPLAYS NO MAJOR DETERIORATION IN SOUND QUALITY. DESPITE NOTICEABLE SURFACE MARKS AND THE OCCASIONAL LIGHT SCRATCH. NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR ON THE COVER OR EXTRA ITEMS, WITHOUT ANY MAJOR DEFECTS, IS ACCEPTABLE.

GOOD: THE RECORD HAS BEEN PLAYED SO MUCH THAT THE SOUND QUALITY HAS NOTICEABLY DETERIORATED, PERHAPS WITH SOME DISTORTION AND MILD SCRATCHES. THE COVER AND CONTENTS SUFFER FROM FOLDING, SCUFFING, SPINE SPLITS, DISCOLOURATION ETC.

FAIR: THE RECORD IS JUST PLAYABLE, BUT HAS NOT BEEN CARED FOR PROPERLY AND DISPLAYS CONSIDERABLE NOISE, IT MAY EVEN JUMP. THE COVER AND CONTENTS WILL BE TORN, STAINED ETC.
