The Beatles : Revolver 1st Mono Press 2/1 'Withdrawn Mix'

This Beatles' first pressing is one of the most collectable and is of course known as the 'Remix 11' misspressing.  When it originally mixed it was reported John did not like the version of 'Tomorrow Never knows' so production was stopped and a new one pressed.  All of the genuine first pressings have a matrix of XEX606 - 1 on S2.

This particular 'Withdrawn' mix plays with exceptional audio and very little interference.  The vinyl is also one of the 'cleanest' I have ever seen and the cover is absolutely stunning!

This first press has 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd' and 'Sold In UK Subject...' text on the labels and the 2/1 matrix.  Doctor Robert is printed as Dr. Robert on both the label and the cover and each song title is on its own line.  The G&L cover has a small 'mono' on the front.

  The vinyl is in superb condition and retains a very healthy glossy sheen for its 54 years of age.  There are no scratches and only a small number of hairlines and only a couple are a little more obvious.  It is without doubt one of the 'cleanest' examples I have seen of a 'Remix 11' first press.  It has been played a number of times judging by the spindle wear but the audio has definitely not suffered because of it as detailed below.  The run out grooves and labels are also very clean with no marking.

Play grading

The lead in grooves on S1 have barely any static so you're thinking this is going to play well...and it does!  The 'spoken' intro on 'Taxman' has perfect clarity and it continues to play with very clear audio and no interference.  There is no distortion on this track which is quiet a rarity and a Mint- is a fair grading.  Plus the fade out plays with stunning precision which gives you a very good idea of the clarity on offer here.

The classic intro on 'Eleanor Rigby' could not play any better and it continues in much the same way.  There are no clicks, pops or crackle and has only the bare minimum of mega light static in the background on the first half of the track.  Quite honestly I'm not sure why I am even mentioning it as it is barely audible and obviously non-intrusive.  The clarity is so impressive and the remainder is without fault.  Let's give it a Near Mint grading.

From the start 'I'm Only Sleeping' plays with audio that is so rich and deep and the only 'background' is a barely audible touch of static and a couple of light clicks just after halfway.  The rest of the track is superb and has no interference at all.  Overall I would grade this as Ex+

The 'Tabla' intro on 'Love You To' is so 'clean' and has only one light static click.  As the vocal begins the audio is very strong and as it progresses the clarity is so impressive with barely any static.  Once again there are no clicks, pops or crackle and Ex+ is fair although the majority is better than that!

'Here There And Everywhere' plays very well but with a little static distortion on the vocal.  This may be due to a mono record being played through a stereo system and is a common feature anyway where the grooves become more 'compressed' as you approach the centre of the record.  There are no clicks or pops and will grade as Ex just to be on the safe side.

'Yellow Submarine' plays with great distinction from start to finish with hardly any static.  Perhaps a little static distortion as you near the end but is not intrusive.  A very respectable Ex+ version with...not one single click or pop!  Many sections do play better than that.

For a final track 'She Said She Said' has excellent audio especially when you consider it is a louder track.  Yes a little distortion but as stated before this could be reduced perhaps.  Aside from that there is no other 'background' and this brings the side to a satisfying Ex finish.

'Good Day Sunshine' has three raspy light clicks right at the start and then plays with great clarity and no other interference.  There are a handful of mega light dust ticks only.  The intro is therefore VG for three seconds and then Ex+ on the remainder of the track.

'And Your Bird Can Sing' is stunning throughout and Near Mint is no exaggeration.  The depth and power of the audio here is so impressive and there is just no interference whatsoever.

For a relatively quiet track 'For No One' belies its near 54 years and plays with remarkable clarity.  There is a minor amount of light static in the middle section but you could easily miss it!  And...there no clicks, pops or crackle!  Once again the audio plays with wonderful definition and there is nothing that detracts from the playback.  A stunning Near Mint version.

'Dr. Robert' also plays with super clear audio.  With only a minimal amount of static distortion (very minimal!) this is Ex+ I can safely say.  The fade out again plays with supreme clarity.

The intro on 'I Want To Tell You' plays with faultless precision and continues in much the same way.  Again there is just a little static distortion but I only mention to be 'complete' in my grading and is not intrusive and as I said before it could be reduced when played as a mono record.  It still plays with 'high end' audio and with, you guessed it, no clicks or pops!  This is Ex+ but again many sections grade higher.

'Got To Get You Into My Life' is of a similar standard and you can't help but be impressed by the audio quality.  There is a little vocal distortion again but there is no other 'background' and the fade out is stunning.  I will grade this as Ex the audio is very strong for a genuine first pressing.

The 'rejected' mix of 'Tomorrow Never Knows' ends the album with wonderful audio.  There is very little distortion and the power and depth of the audio is amongst the 'cleanest' I have ever heard on a 'Remix 11 miss-pressing'.  I am almost tempted to grade as Near Mint but perhaps Ex+ is a better evaluation.  The fade out again plays to superb clarity.

In summary this rare and very collectable first pressing has very impressive audio with very little interference.  Yes there is a little distortion here and there but it is minimal and it certainly does not detract from the 'listening' experience.  Just to reiterate I'm sure this could be reduced when played as a mono record.  As stated the vinyl is very clean and is easily one of the best 'Remix 11' pressings I have seen.  It has obviously been very well looked after down the years.  The cover is also in fantastic condition with no obvious wear at all.  Never seen better!

The Cover

This is a stunning example of this 'first press' G & L Patents pending cover.  The edges and spine are in superb shape with no shelf wear and there is hardly any corner wear either plus the opening edge is practically untouched.  The laminated front cover is totally unmarked and has only a couple of mega tiny creases and there is no laminate splitting or lifting.  The back cover is also in sublime condition with no marking and only the lightest of fading.  The flipbacks are beautifully clean with only a minimal amount of 'greying' on a couple of edges.  Honestly it doesn't get much better than this!  It is a superb Near Mint- example of its kind and would impress any avid Beatles' collector!

The Labels

The yellow/black Parlophone labels have lost none of their original condition and have no marking or writing on them.  There is a fair amount of spindle wear and KT tax stamp can be seen on the S1 label.

The Inner Sleeve

The original Emitex sleeve is in excellent condition with no side splits or tears and only a little creasing here and there.
