Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, very fine and faint spindle marks.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 156 grams. A very heavy pressing, not untypical of the era and this label.

Brief Info: The debut Band album that skillfully blended country, rock, folk, classical, R&B, and soul. It received very favourable reviews when issued but failed to sell at all well. Highly regarded by fellow artists and it remains influential and over the years, it has made it’s way into collections. But the very early originals are never easy to find and indeed I am sure this is the first one I have ever offered on Ebay. They are also well-known for their association with Bob Dylan. A very nice all-round example and heavily pressed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with front laminate. The wraps around the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and has the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The front is in fantastic condition: very shiny, fresh and clear laminate that is fully adhered and unlifted. A few fine edge surface creases are rarely avoided as a bare minimum and even under light this has few noteworthy marks. Very light traces of dulling around the rim which barely even registers with normal viewing and the exposed strip on the right edge is clean, unchipped or grubby. A real looker and it will not prove easy to find better.

Cover Back: The back is almost equally impressive and has aged little. Any darkening of the main unprotected panel is light and faint – a faint trace of toning on the left edge but little else. The three flipbacks are solid, very clean and attractive. Even here, the laminate retains excellent shine and the ends have minimal traces of burring and no grime lines. No ring wear and the only tiny crease on the top right corner tip. All very nice indeed.

Top Edge: Totally smooth, fully laminated and very straight.

Bottom Edge: As above with just small rubs to the very tips.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear and devoid of thickening or burring. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A superb spine as well: solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends are tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: A little tip rubbing, most on bottom left but even this is modest. All retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this classic late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: little actual wear but some patchy toning from the seam adhesive. So it appears a little aged but has little creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and probably worth a (+), a record that appears little played and any surface marks few, light and faint. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with no penetrating scratches. Visually a super record that should please many collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This largely overlooked classic plays up to it’s high visual grading with little to fault. The sound and production is strong and forward with volume. Any groove wear is light and minimal and any gentle surface sound is largely lost. But mild hints of it’s great age and era when played on very revealing equipment like my LP12 which takes no prisoners whatsoever in it’s clinical reproduction of the information. No pops or noteworthy clicks were heard and the complex vocals and sound remains solid and enjoyable. Not quite for the highly discerning collector but sound is excellent and largely above for this lovely record. Not easy to find so early pressed and many I would be certain the surface will be more used and abused than this very clean looking copy. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. It will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
