A RARE and FASCINATING album here, essential sixties music!
ANDREW LOOG OLDHAM was the manager for THE ROLLING STONES since 1963, and being a young enthusiastic impresario of his time, his main peer was Brian Epstein of The Beatles fame. Whereas the Fab Four had given one of their excellent songs to The Stones to keep their profile in the record charts, they'd strangely seeded a public rivalry by taking digs at them!
Mr Oldham carries that on in the sleeve notes, in a very accusatory way!
Perhaps they could now claim to be equals, as Mick and Keith were prolific songwriters by 1965 - and this album stands as proof of that fact.
Where George Martin was underlining Beatles tunes as new classical compositions with his orchestral arrangement albums - Andrew Oldham countered with a sterling response!!
He compiled the best known Rolling Stones pieces to produce an outstanding long player.
Some of these treatments are sweeping, even MAJESTIC at times, and at times are quintessential mid 60s timepieces, reminiscent of the movies and documentaries of the era. However.....more recently The Verve famously lifted the version of 'The Last Time' directly from THIS record, to create 'Bittersweet Symphony', a HUGE hit for them - and they were promptly sued for plagiarism, only recently to have been awarded full use of their version.
A great sixties UK album, and here's the unboxed Decca FFSS lable original!
The sound is SUPERB, as the lable were renowned for the 'Deep Groove' pressings - and this disc is in WONDERFUL shape.
Condition;
The VINYL is NEAR MINT, and so plays beautifully!
The DECCA Blue and Silver FFSS LABLES are EXCELLENT+
No stickers, bright and clean, some spindle lines visible around the centre, light wear only.
The FRONT LAMINATED flipback tab card COVER is VG.
Some handling creases, all seams intact and strong. There's been a repaired right bottom corner damage, hence the grade.
