Label Conditions: All four look practically as made: very clean and attractive with any spindle traces barely even visible. This double set has clearly hardly been played.

Cat Number: OMM 2/56021.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of these Records: 117 / 125 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: Scarce: more so outside Germany. This groundbreaking double set was not originally issued in the UK and these pioneering German albums on the pink ear (ohr) label are sort-after by collectors of the genre.

So What is Krautrock and its Rarity?: ‘Krautrock’ was an affectionate term given to a new wave of young German bands in the late 60s and early 70s. Before the emergence of these pioneering experimental rock and electronic artists, the German music scene was a real mess of sugary pop music. Out of this fog of a musical mire, a very new sound emerged as radical and as daring as anything ever heard. Whereas in the UK, rock music was very much blues or psych-based, but these young long-haired, pioneering German musicians played music that was very different. They opened new musical horizons and boundaries into the use of sound as entertainment. Several were classically trained musicians (Can) – some could barely play an instrument as all (Kluster). Far too weird and experimental for most, many were into avant garde territory, but this German underground scene was admired by many and loved by a small number of record buyers of the time. The sounds they created were often challenging and difficult, but unique and were highly influential for the development of music. Some used conventional instruments, some delved into electronics and some used unconventional devices to form sound. A few became successful even outside Germany with the odd hit single or two (Kraftwerk and Can), but some did not compromise and never sort commercial success (Faust, Neu). Although there were others, the best-known of the early experimental Krautrock bands were: Kraftwerk, Can, Faust, Amon Duul I and II, Neu, Popul Vuh, Guru Guru, Kluster and Tangerine Dream. All are worth checking out – they made some of the most groundbreaking music in rock and their importance is beyond any dispute. In terms of rarity, these early albums are never easy to find especially in top conditions, they sold in relatively small numbers and are seldom seen or offered.

Brief Info: ‘Zeit’, the German word for ‘Time’ is an expansive double album of spacey music – dreamy, eerie soundscapes using the then new technology of complex synthesisers. This was the band’s third album, issued in Germany in 1972, but not issued in the UK at this time. The first four TD albums were issued on Ohr (Ear), a groundbreaking label that brought the world’s attention to the growing underground Krautrock scene that was fast developing at the time. The early TD sound away from the more guitar-orientated debut, was very ambient with long quiet music. It really does take you into the depths of space and time. These early TD albums are known as the ‘pink years’, from the labels pink ear logo, they are hard to find and many albums on this label are very rare and highly collectable and sort-after. The pink years of this now famous pioneering German band were an embryo for their developing sound that was later widely used in soundtrack music. They went on to become quite popular within their field issuing many albums, regularly touring and proving successful. The early albums are not commercial and they border on the avant garde – a trait of many of the German progressive bands of the day. This is not easy either, the music is tantalisingly gentle. The Ohr label pressing quality was highly variable and something of a lottery, which for this, and other similar albums is not the best of news. In terms of sound quality for this copy, it will not prove easy to ever find better, this has barely even been played and is pretty much as made. Being so quiet, the grooves are very tightly compacted together which makes the playing surfaces even more vulnerable, but all look as new. There is the odd microscopic pressing blister, one causing 4 or 5 clicks (but all tracks perfectly). Surface sound is minimal but a little is present which is nigh-on impossible to avoid as are the odd sporadic pop or click. I can truly say ‘silence’ is impossible on this double set, especially on this label, but if an original German-pressed Ohr copy is wanted, I can hardly imagine a better example will be seen or heard. This is a haunting and eerie trip into the void of space and few did it better than TD. Few had tried music of this type before and clearly it was never going to sell in large amounts. It did however cause interest in their native land but outside Germany, few would have been familiar. That said, the legendary DJ John Peel did rate them highly and the band’s second album ‘Alpha Centauri’ was rated as his favourite from its year of issue. Like fellow-Germans Kraftwerk, the early album sounds are challenging but rewarding and worthy of checking out. The time as come for more recognition of the early pioneering work of this groundbreaking band.

Cover Grade and Format: EX+ a gatefold format with the front and back laminated. Made with thin card hence its somewhat fragile. Printed and made in Germany.

Cover Laminate and Front: Superb artwork of a full lunar eclipe, this sets the tone for the spacey music inside. The laminate is very clean, fresh, clear and fully adhered bar a small lift near the top left corner that has possibly had a minor knock. Shiny and uncreased with no peeling, the super graphic is seen to full advantage and this will not be easy to find much better.

Cover Laminate and Back: The back is even better, the lack of friction rubs or dulling to both surfaces is great news as is the general lack or marks.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The unlaminated centrefold is fantastic and has little to fault at all.

Top Edges: Little wear at all, one very small and super-fine laminate split only (but look hard).

Bottom Edges: One very small chip near the right corner, little else to fault.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with no wear or feathering and both guaranteed untrimmed. Records entered on these right outside edges.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight, minimal compression and square, both right edges meet up perfectly together. A minor tilt to right if being critical. All text is near perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: A small crease to the bottom front right corner tip but little else to fault. The top right may have had a minor knock, but the actual corner is undamaged. All, bar the bottom right retain superb shape and definition.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this fragile early 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. These German originals are not seen too often outside Germany and are a thing of real beauty. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inners: Both the original plain white, unlined inners are included in almost as new condition. No edge splits and minimal traces of ageing, one semi-crease only to one.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Mint(-) for all four sides. A superb pair of Ears that are super clean, shiny, jet black and very solidly pressed. As stated, the playing areas are compact with large run-out groove areas. Typical of gentle albums where the grooves are cut closely together. The louder the music, the wider the groove distance is, a rule on all records. This is a long double set but oh-so quiet and gentle, the grooves compacted which never helps the pressing for lack of surface sound. The patterns of the grooves jagged and complex which indicates complex and usually real hi-fi sound, which again this has. Barely a noteworthy mark on any, but the odd minor pressing pit or dimple, any present are microscopic with just the odd minor click or two. A pair with minimal plays on all the evidence and both will remind of new records.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play well considering the near impossible information they contain. Very gentle, ambient soundscape music which takes you diretly into the depths of space - most will know what I mean - those science fiction films where solitude and tranquility is portrayed in space by the music. This is the subject for ‘Zeit’, time in space, there are very few louder moments. The records have strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. There is a little gentle surface sound on side one, but very gentle indeed and a few sporadic clicks over the duration of the album. No Ohr copy will ever play silent, the chances are a near impossibility especially as Ohr Records are well known for not being the very best for ultimate pressing quality. This is an immensely difficult album, if silence is mandatory, well get the CD version, it is likely to be the only way this will be experienced like that. I am as certain as I can be that few copies will match or outperform this early German pressing. I am certain both records have been played very lightly, if indeed at all, and have been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Put as simply as possible, both are practically as new, this would not have been silent even from day one, of that I have not doubts whatsoever. Little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this groundbreaking album that almost invented this genre of music. This set will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended. But I say again, there are minor sound blemishes and gentle extraneous sounds, if this is an issue, do not bid.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
