The Skatalites – Ska Boo-Da-Ba – Top Sounds From Top Deck - 1966 Doctor Bird Records LP – DLM 5000 - Rare Original Pressing
This auction is for the original UK pressing of the mega rare recordings by The Skatalites released on Doctor Bird Records label in 1966 under the title Ska Boo-Da-Ba, Top Sounds From Top Deck as catalogue number DLM 5000.
Rumoured to be limited to a pressing of 200 copies this LP is now extremely rare and almost impossible to find in any condition.
It contains twelve instrumental tracks recorded by The Skatalites in Jamaica around 1964/65 at the studio of famed ska producer Justin Yapp and are considered by some to be the best recordings the Skatalites ever committed to record.
Vinyl
As with copies of any reggae or ska records from this period, the vinyl has obviously been well played and contains several visible surface marks, but plays without any skips or jumps. There is some audible surface noise between tracks but it does not detract from the overall quality or loudness of the recordings. For that reason I would only grade the vinyl as a Good +.
Sleeve
The LP sleeve, designed by the legendary Guy Stevens, is in good condition for an LP of this age as can be seen from the photos, but does have some minor damage. The front of the sleeve is laminated and has some minor creasing. There is a small 1cm tear on the right hand opening about 12cm down from the top right of the sleeve.
The back of the LP sleeve has some slight staining. The top left corner has about 2.5cm missing from the ‘flipback’. The top of the cover has a 6cm seam split at the edge. The sleevenotes by Stanley G. Lee are all legible.
The spine has some creasing as can be seen from the pictures but is completely intact. The wording of the record label, the title and catalogue number are all clearly visible.
Labels
Both labels are clean and complete and all of the original printed song titles, record company name and catalogue number are intact – which is known to be a particular issue with original copies of this LP. There is some signs of spindle wear from regular playing.
