Description

Recorded in Bombay for the King record label in 1940 by the artist Simeon Jacob Kharilker (1900-1971), a leading member of the Bene Israel community. These records had very limited distribution and their existence was unknown until they surfaced about 20 years ago. No copies have been put up for sale since then.  Sung in Hebrew, the recording of Hativah segues into God save the King in keeping with loyalty to the Raj. Yaroom Venisa, sung on Passover, is based on an Arab secular tune. The mandolin player on these tracks, Abdul Rahim Tagihof (1905-1979) was a pioneer performer on some of the most successful Bollywood films of the 40s and 50s.
