Hungarian guitarist Gabor Szabo carried the sounds of Budapest into the heart of mid-60s American jazz, bending modal improv round folk and pop melodies. Spellbinder, his fifth album and pivotal early US statement - first released in 1966 on Impulse! - defined that audience. Cut at Rudy Van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs studio with producer Bob Thiele, it places Szabo in fine company, Ron Carter on bass, Chico Hamilton on drums, Willie Bobo and Victor Pantoja on percussion. Together they map out droning vamps, restless Latin rhythms and elegantly economical guitar lines. Highlights include the brooding title piece and a transformative version of Sonny Bono's 'Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)', alongside 'Gypsy Queen', 'Cheetah' and 'Yearning'.
