Label Conditions: Both superb: very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces very few, fine and faint, this elusive first pressing looks hardly played.

Cat Number: AMLH 64306.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 123 grams. Around average for it’s era.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: poor selling when first issued, this is never an easy one to find. Also, as can be seen on my pictures, this record is a red translucent pressing. This means light will pass through the record when held to a bright light source, but you cannot see through it. So when placed in front of an intense light bulb – here I used my visual grading light – it will have an eerie red glow as can be seen. When viewed normally in standard daylight conditions, the record appears as a normal black pressing.

Brief Info: Supertramp’s second album which marked a distinctly different sound direction, now having a more progressive sound which was soon to make them household names and major sellers. But this album failed to sell at all well when first issued in 1971, even with a somewhat unmissable and daring cover. The heavily tatooed model was Marion Hollier who was reputedly paid £45 for the picture. To keep within Ebay rules, I decided to censor my picture but this graphic is more than easy enough to find on the internet. The two black box cover-ups I digitically edited, hide nothing in terms of wear or issues to this splendid cover. To be clear: the cover on offer does NOT have the two small black boxes. This is a difficult album to find, few had even heard of this quite new act at the time. By the time of the band’s third album ‘Crime of the Century’, was a wider audience found largely because of the hit single ‘Dreamer’ – then album sales soared. By then however, the first original copies of this one had gone. This a very fine red transluscent example, indeed this being my very first ever copy good enough to put on to the open market which tells me firstly, it is hard to find, and secondly, even harder in fine conditions. A copy most collectors and fans will enjoy.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: (or close to). An unlaminated gatefold format with a matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by Howards Printers. Includes the original plained white inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A daring and colourful front cover, this has little to fault bar a little mild rubbing near the bottom edge. Any marks or creases tiny, very few and faint, this one sets a high standard.

Cover Back: A little small corner tip rubs apart, there is little else to fault on this impressive back that is devoid of ringwear – that rarely the case.

Cover Inner Gatefold: In terms of rubbing or creasing, barely any and looking impressive. There was a small movement split on the back top edge which I have neatly repaired. This the reason for my cautious overall grading, this cover actually looks better. This small split (approx 1 inch) is visible, but neat enough to hardly even draw the eye’s attention.

Top Edges: The small and neat movement split apart, there is little else to these edges which are straight and hardly rubbed at all. The neat repair I made myself the only significant issue to this elusive gatefold cover.

Bottom Edges: Minimal rubbing to these more vulnerable storage edges, mostly being near the right corners.

Right Edge(s), and Type: The front has a real tucked and folded edge, this has barely any hint of wear at all. The back opening entrance edge is clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: An impressive spine: solid, thick and straight with barely any compression. Also folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and any rubbing to the surface or even the folds is again minimal and faint. Note: the white seen on the bottom corner is part of the graphic, not a rub.

Corners: Mostly light tip rubs, the odd moderate one (bottom back left) with no dinks or knocks. Very fine to excellent shape retained.

Cover Summary: Not perfect, but still a very fine example of this clearly wear-prone and rarer original gatefold cover. This has far more positives than negatives and it will please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white unlined inner with just the usual edge toning. Two neat window circles with just the odd tiny nick, minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please many collectors. Note: the red translucent effect will only be seen when placed directly in front of a bright light source, with standard room viewing, this record appears black.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality albummostly plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd minor trace here and there – but barely anything really unless digital silence is expected from a 44-year-old vinyl record – and good luck with that. Overall, a very clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this rarer first pressing significantly I feel sure. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Blue moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
