Back in the sixties I was travelling around with my long-time friend Jerry Lee Lewis going from show to show in his private DC3 plane. Eventually the tour ended and we wound up back in Memphis and I became a guest at Jerry's home on Lake Shore Drive.
Jerry was kind enough to drive me to Tom Phillips Select-o-Hits shop and warehouse at 605 Chelsea Avenue. It was an amazing place with a retail shop at the front and a huge warehouse at the rear that stored literally millions of Sun records, an huge old broadcast station transmitter (under which I found some Elvis Sun stampers - but that is another story) and a huge amount of what Tom called "junk from the rafters at 706". Amongst this junk were loads of old correspondence, lots of reel to reel tapes from people seeking auditions (many unopened), old invoices etc. I asked if I could take a few and Tom said, "Help yourself, we will be throwing all that stuff out soon as we need the space to store more cut-outs".
Now my sisters are encouraging me to get rid of my "junk"!!! According I am making a start by selling these three Sun items from 1953.
The first photograph shows the original Sun letterhead.
The second picture shows a distributer ordering 550 78's and just 50 45's of Sun186 and Sun 187.
Both records by Junior Parker and The Prisonaires are held in high esteem by Sun aficionados and sometimes they put them in a frame - perhaps somebody would like to have a historic document added to their display.
The third picture is of a 1953 telegram from the Monarch pressing plant urgently requesting labels for Sun 186.
The fourth picture shows the late Tom and Irene Phillips outside Select-o-Hits in 1967.
The fifth picture is one I sent to Jerry and the sixth shows that it subsequently went on display in Jerry's bedroom at the Nesbit Ranch.
