The Albums:
STEPHEN STILLS
Stephen Stills’ self-titled solo debut is rife with his familiar Southern California folk-pop sound and folk melodies, yet also present are Latin, rock, and blues accents that inform songs such as “Do For the Others.” Stills’ coming-out party is also notable for its guest list. Recording in London, Stills partnered with Eric Clapton on “Go Back Home” and Jimi Hendrix (who passed away in advance of the album's release) on the driving “Old Times, Good Times.” John Sebastian, Rita Coolidge, Cass Elliot, and Stills’ two longtime associates and bandmates, David Crosby and Graham Nash, also contribute. If that isn’t enough, the record is augmented with the all-time classic “Love the One You're With” and favorite “Sit Yourself Down.” Mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, this stunning LP reissue sounds drop-dead gorgeous.
STEPHEN STILLS – MANASSAS
A sprawling 2-LP masterpiece, akin to the Beatles' White Album, the Stones' Exile on Main St., or Wilco's Being There in its makeup, if not its sound. Manassas finds Stills and company (Chris Hillman, Dallas Taylor, and Al Perkins, among others) at the intersection of rock, folk, country and blues. Distinctive styles are noticeable song by song, yet it is the strength and credibility of the mixture that makes Manassas such a great overall experience. The first fourth of the album focuses on 60s rock with Afro-Cuban overtones, followed by a batch of country and bluegrass-oriented material. The folk-rock track “It Doesn't Matter” kicks off the third section and the final section wraps the set up with the rootsy groove of “Blues Man,” a tribute to Jimi Hendrix. A must for folk-rock, CSNY, and Americana fans, and another great pressing from Rhino!
STEPHEN STILLS – JUST ROLL TAPE: APRIL 26, 1968
A moment in rock & roll history, unearthed! In April of 1968, after leaving Buffalo Springfield, but before joining CSN, Stephen Stills found himself in a New York recording session with then girlfriend Judy Collins. Stills wandered down the hall with an engineer and an acoustic guitar, and laying down a couple of hundred-dollar bills, told the engineer "Just Roll Tape." What he recorded in the ensuing hours was the first ever versions of what would become classics for Stephen Stills, CSN, CSNY and Manassas. Almost 40 years later the tapes, rescued decades ago from a garbage bin, are finally remastered and released to the public. Includes the first recordings of the future CSN hits “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” “Helplessly Hoping” and “Wooden Ships,” as well as demos of Stills' solo classics “Change Partners,” “Black Queen,” and “Know You Got To Run,” and Manassas’ “So Begins The Task.”
MANASSAS – PIECES
Previously unreleased tracks from Steven Stills & Manassas! After recording his second solo album, Stephen Stills formed Manassas in 1971 with a talented group of musicians that included Chris Hillman. Manassas ultimately released two albums, 1972’s eponymous double-album debut and the 1973 follow-up, Down The Road. The 2-LP set Pieces features alternate versions of two songs from Down The Road: “Do You Remember The Americans” and “Lies” (featuring guitarist Joe Walsh). The collection also includes the legendary group’s unreleased performances of “Sugar Babe” and “Word Game,” a pair of songs Stills recorded in 1971 for his second solo album. Other tracks include “Like A Fox,” a song recorded with blues guitarist Bonnie Raitt on background vocals, and the Latin-tinged “Tan Sola Y Triste” (Spanish for ‘So Alone and Sad’).
