This listing is for:
SOUNDSVILLE!
pre-Velvet Underground Lou Reed
.
DESIGN Records DLP-187
Original 1965 issue MONO LP
1st PRESSING • Silver/Black Grooved Label
Original back with ''A.P.B."

VINYL is VG+/EX
Very clean vinyl with plenty of original gloss. Side 1 is VG+ with a few very light surface hairlines only - non-sounding, non-feelable. Side 2 is very close to NM. Grooved 1st issue labels are super clean both sides.
.
COVER is EX
Still in the original factory Shrink Wrap - Crisp and clean with soft (back side only) lower corner crease; lightly bumped corners. No other issues. Small rub at top tip of spine where 1 1/2" of shrink is broken. Seams and spine otherwise intact with no splits.

*Please excuse any 'grainy' look to pictures (...from low-light photos).

STRICT CONSERVATIVE GOLDMINE GRADING
NM / EX(VG++) / VG+ / VG

EARLY (pre-Velvets) LOU-REED - hired to direct and put together a Budget label compilation LP of diverse Teen Sounds.

Sounds of Detroit, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, West Coast, Surf, Hot Rod, Motorcycle, British Invasion, Campus...

Here's the First Pressing of this Cult-legendary 1960's LP - with the original Deep Groove Silver text on Black label for DESIGN Records.
Black and white back cover is generic DESIGN Records artists display ad, with the hand-scribed "A.P.B." printed in l.l. corner.
Original USA issue, pressed and issued out of New York.

MATRIX NUMBERS etched
SIDE ONE: DLP·187·A·1   R
SIDE TWO: DLP·187·B·1   A (...or upside-down V)
The "B" in the dead wax looks like a 13, but it is a B.

If you look the LP up on DISCOGS, you will find the 1st entry matches this one exactly, right down to the 'A.P.B.' ...pictured there at Discogs ...that I thought for the longest time was a previous owner's initials hand-written on the cover. Nope - whatever A.P.B. is for, it's printed there and can be found on all 1st Pressings. (it does NOT show up on the other releases of this album listed there).

While Lou Reed is widely acknowledged for his playing and singing on the songs here by THE BEACHNUTS ("Cycle-Annie" and "Tiger in My Tank") and THE ROUGHNECKS ("You're Driving Me Insane") - it has been said that he was actually the main force in the hands-on arrangement, production and conception of what this album came to be. There are no composer credits but it seems that Lou either wrote or had a hand in writing most or all of them - definitely on the above mentioned tracks.

The classics "Cycle Annie" and "You're Driving Me Insane" have shown up on bootlegs and have traded in collectors' circles for years. They made their first appearance on Soundsville!, with Lou Reed adding hip-credibility -- and much fun to the disc. Lou Reed also plays guitar on all the tracks of this LP - much else remains shrouded in mystery.

Far and away the best tracks are his "You're Driving Me Insane", Credited as the Roughnecks and hyped on the LP cover as "the sounds of England", and, as the Beachnuts, with the well-produced "Cycle Annie", (which was, of course, "the sounds of the Motorcycle"). Reed agreed in an interview that "Cycle Annie" is a quite good song, and if he included it on a future album, his fans would eat it up. He's got great attitude on both "Cycle Annie" and "You're Driving Me Insane." He gets another entry here with a rougher, tougher Beach Boys styled "I've Got a Tiger in My Tank".

Jeannie Larrimore sounds like she's fronting the Velvet Underground instead of Nico on "Johnny Won't Surf No More" - a really humorous "Leader of the Pack" meets "Johnny Angel" - and Lou Reed is confirmed as playing Guitar here as well.

Vinyl inside anti-static lined inner sleeve.
.
Even though still in the original shrink-wrap,
Album kept in an extra, protective poly outer-sleeve.
