Description
Up for auction is a copy of the rare Sonny Rollins album "Plus 4" released on Prestige Records (PRLP 7038) in 1956. This is a guaranteed original mono deep groove first pressing, with RVG in the deadwax. Has correct original "446 W. 50th St., NYC" address on both labels and back of album cover. No printed titling on spine of cover, as was the case for the first issues.
Front cover looks nice. Lamination is shiny and attractive. A little bit of moisture rippling in lower right corner. Corners look sharp, though a couple show a small amount of rubbing. Seams are strong, with no splits and no cracking. Back cover is in pretty good shape, though some of the print shows some rubbing loss, mostly at the top. There is some moisture staining along left open edge, and along bottom left edge. Some very faint writing along top left edge (looks like former owner's name, though it's hard to see). I would give the cover an overall grade of VG+ (though the front cover is closer to EX).
The vinyl also looks to be in nice condition. Retains much of its original high gloss shine. No serious scratches or scuffs, though it does have some very faint hairlines and very light marks on both sides that can't really be felt, nor do they seem to affect play back quality. Labels are bright and clean, with no obvious marks around spindle holes. Play tested, overall it sounds nice, though Side One does open with some faint surface noise that seems to fade as the side progresses. At no time does it compete with the overall volume of the music. Side Two plays quieter than Side One, with only a little noticeable background noise. Still, an enjoyable copy of this Rollins rarity. I'd grade this vinyl to be VG+/VG++.
Overall, a decent and presentable copy of a hard-to-find jazz classic. Not near mint, but nonetheless a very affordable alternative. I recently sold a Near Mint copy of this record for $800. This one is much more affordable but still very much collectable. 100% guaranteed, no risk buying. Money back, no questions asked.
