Originally released in 1985 and now celebrating its 40th anniversary with this mammoth deluxe edition, Hell Awaits marked the critically acclaimed sophomore effort from California pioneering thrash metal legends and Big 4 alumni - Slayer. After the success of 1983's debut album Show No Mercy, Metal Blade label owner and producer Brian Slagel agreed to distribute the band's follow up record, due to its predecessor being the label's highest selling title up to that point. With an increased budget, the classic line-up of Tom Arya (vocals/bass), Kerry King (guitar), Jeff Hanneman (guitar) and Dave Lombardo (drums) would continue to push the creative envelope further with an even heavier compositional approach than that explored on 1984's Haunting The Chapel EP, with the common consensus being that release served as the vital bridging point to Slayer finally nailing "their sound". Much darker and menacing than their debut, cuts like the legendary title-track, 'At Dawn They Sleep', and 'Hardening of the Arteries', all fuse elements of thrash, hardcore punk, sludge and death metal, into a cacophonous maelstrom that would ultimately serve as a blueprint for the next generation of extreme metal, with several tracks covered and cited by acts including Cradle Of Filth, Incantation, Benediction, Earth Crisis, Mr. Bungle and Six Feet Under, as an integral influence. Restored from the original master tapes, this deluxe edition comes complete with two additional LPs of their Live from Bochum 1985 performance whilst touring the record, as well as a 60-page booklet and a slew of other memorabilia including tour laminate and ticket replicas.
