***STILL IN THE ORIGINAL FACTORY SHRINK WRAP ~ All Clean!
The highest selling Pearls Before Swine Album. FM underground-rock radio would occasionally play this album. What stands out about 'These Things Too' is the texture. Several instruments continually weave through songs that are exquisitely sung by Tom Rapp.
Sadly this album is usually overlooked by most reviewers who either haven't played it enough or they are expecting something much simpler like Balaklava. This album takes several listens. There is a lot more going on that one might realize. Chances are the known cover of Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" would be considered the best song, but to be honest there are several songs that are better.
After the opening "Footnote" the album jumps into "Sail Away" and the texture begins. Song after song even with silly interludes like "Frog in the Window" the music just keeps telling a story that is continually accented by instruments like the Celeste, Banjo and Electric Violin. The last two songs are the hauntingly beautiful "When I was a Child" and the no less intense "These Things Too". This is a totally different kettle of fish to Balaklava. If you are in the mood this is a magical album in which to lose yourself. Their Balaklava album is great too, but compared to this it is just child's play.
