A unique and infamous entry in Elvis’ catalog – Having Fun With Elvis On Stage is the so-called “talking album only,” consisting entirely of Presley’s stage banter, jokes, and stories taken from concerts between 1969 and 1974. No songs are included, making this one of the most unusual Elvis records ever released. Originally compiled and issued by Colonel Tom Parker’s Boxcar label and later distributed by RCA in October 1974, the album quickly became a curiosity piece among fans and critics alike.

  • Format: LP (vinyl)

  • Year of release: 1974

  • Content: Two continuous sides (approx. 37 min) of live spoken interludes and humorous monologues from Elvis in concert.

  • Reception: Though widely considered one of the strangest records in Elvis’ career, the album charted modestly and is now sought after by collectors for its rarity and historical value.

  • Cover design: Front features six black-and-white photos of Elvis in his white jumpsuit, with the bold title Having Fun With Elvis On Stage and the phrase “A Talking Album Only.” The back cover displays a map of the United States with concert cities marked and the word “SOLD OUT!”

How to Identify an Original 1974 Pressing:

  • The very first Boxcar Records issue has no RCA logos and no catalog number anywhere on the cover or labels. The record labels are plain white with only basic text.

  • The subsequent RCA issue (late 1974) carries catalog number CPM1-0818, orange RCA Victor labels, and the RCA logo on the sleeve.

  • Later U.S. reissues feature different label colors (tan in the mid-70s, black RCA labels around 1977–79, catalog AFM1-0818) and sometimes a small “RE” mark on the back cover.

Because of these details, sealed originals without RCA logos are significantly rarer and more valuable compared to the more common RCA editions.
