RARE STILL SEALED 1973 ORIGINAL STONED 'HEADS' ALBUM IN RARE QUADRAPHONIC
SMOKE DREAMS
Captain Matchbox Whoppee Band
\ USA - ESP RECORDS - ESP 3009
STILL STEALED original vinyl in triple thick gatefold cover, recorded in delightful 4-channel QUADRAPHONIC, one of the harder to get Quad Lp's of the early 70's...these underground 'heads' from down under whack-it-up with stoned flavors that are completely suitable for the sounds of the ESP label's underground roster...
The Australian music scene of the late '60s and early '70s was richly populated by reckless neo-traditional groups with names like the Starving Wild Dogs, the Stovepipe Spasm Band, the Gutbucket Blues Band, the Moonshine Jug and String Band, the Original Battersea Heroes, and now the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band. Their most popular single, "I Can't Dance (Got Ants in My Pants)" b/w "Jungle Dance," hit the streets in April 1973. Two months later, the Captain Matchbox Whoopee Band came out with their first LP, entitled Smoke Dreams. This record was packed with vintage old-tyme jazz, blues, and jug band tunes reinterpreted in ways that appealed to the drug-addled hippie youth culture of the early '70s, ala the first couple of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band Lp's era '67 / '68 (stoned head-comix grooves)
The USA 'ESP RECORDS' version of Smoke Dreams was remixed and released in the then newfangled Quadraphonic audio format, and this version of this LP is evidently now something of a collector's item for Quad fanatics.
