Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only a little above light, mainly fine and quite faint spindle marks. The record in super condition with few marks and plays with fantastic clean sound.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Quite rare: Savoy brown albums did not sell in vast numbers are are not seen often. Also the unboxed label was changed in 1969 to the small boxed format making originals considerably rarer still with few made or sold, this one very late indeed and likely around for only a few weeks from the initial run.

Brief Info: The fourth album by this blues band, this a very late unboxed 1969 set and seldom seen as an original. This is half studio and half live and a terrific blues-rock workout. Side two recorded at The Cooks Ferry Inn, Edmonton, London on Monday 12th May, 1969. Another rare gem from the same one-owner from new as the other two Savoy Brown originals I am currently offering. Not the biggest selling band and early originals hard to find, this particularly so, being issued right on the fringe of the change to the more familiar boxed label format. This record plays superbly again and the cover very nice as well.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: actually looking better. A single format with front Clarifoil laminate. This covers all the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The back is smooth, matt and unprotected. This including the back peep-hole mono/stereo indicator that appeared in 1969, here filled by the original blue inner sleeve indicating a stereo record inside. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker. Includes the original inner sleeve that the owner included extra information and song times in pen as seen on my picture.

Cover Cosmetic Improvements: None Apparent.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains a lovely shine, freshness and clarity with minimal dulling, a trace around the rim shape seen under light. As per many Clarifoil laminated covers, this has as fairly fine line of spine edge lifting with one fine crack on the spine surface. But the laminate remains solid and has hardly any creasing – one on the right right corner shows little. A small tip rub on the bottom right but little detracts from the dark and colourful front.

Cover Back: The back has faired well with any grubbiness to the predominately white surface mild and very light. Minimal creasing, marks or wear, the peep-hole also crisp and undamaged as seen in close-up. For a 45-year-old unprotected back, this still looks impressive.

Top Edge: Neat, straight with little wear at all. A small chip to the left corner but the surface smooth and free of scuffs.

Bottom Edge: Barely any wear to the main laminated folded edge, the back panel end a little thickened which hardly uncommon on storage edges this great age – again I am being somewhat critical.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These entrance edges remain fairly sharp with any thickening or burring modest as seen viewed end-on. These guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way, the unprotected strip on the front quite wide and importantly present where the laminate ends naturally short. This fine strip barely worn, any burr traces tiny and few.

Spine and Text: Mostly solid, with one crease-crack near the top. Still quite straight with any compression light, the ends are nipped in manufacture. The text all present bar a tiny clip to the ‘U’ in ‘FURTHER’ that has the crease, all else strong and unworn.

Corners: Fairly small tip rubs with a couple nearer moderate. Fine to very fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A very attractive cover with only light blemishes or wear. Another scarce original that should please many collectors again.

The Inner Sleeve: Difficult to put a grade on this as the original owner addded information with a green pen, but neatly so, without it it wold be near excellent or thereabouts. Not too difficult finding the same style inner if deemed necessary, but I always include the original inner if at all possible, and this ‘modification’ arguably, adds character. A vintage polylined Decca blue inner for stereo records. A little aged with the usual darkening of the edge seam adhesive. Barely any creasing and all the closed edges unsplit with no repairs required. The odd tiny nick to the top entrance edge. This one date-coded 9-69 (September 1969), so likely one of the very last unboxed Decca ‘rock’ records made.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and probably worthy of a (+). A very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks most very light, fine and faint as seen far more critically under bright angled light. No penetrating ‘needle’ marks and just the odd one showing a little more, but most whispy types and all totally superficial and harmless. This plays with lovely clean sound throughout. Visually a super, and rare original unboxed record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This very elusive unboxed original blues album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Even the live side is well recorded. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing as you would expect from Decca – for me, the very best UK manufacturer of top quality records. Few available copies will outperform this rare first issue. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played only lightly and has not been abused on vintage record players of the distant past. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Both record and cover will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
