Label Conditions: Both superb: Ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive and clearly little handled or likely played. Just one or two very fine and faint spindle traces just seen under light.

Weight of this Record: 110 grams. Somewhere near average for this time, not an era of high pressing weights in most cases with the oil shortage of this era.

Rarity: Moderately scarce: I have always found this the hardest original Sandy Denny album to find especially in very fine, little played conditions.

Brief Artist & Album Info: Another gorgeous set from possibly the UK’s finest ever female vocalist, her third solo album after leaving Fairport Convention and Fotheringay’s breakup. Most of Fairport Convention and others back her on this album anyway and this set is quite varied with a slight shift in style. From the very beginning true beauty and class is exuded from these vintage grooves with the magnificent ‘Solo’ which has to rank as one of her finest ever songs, the title track follows and again is sublime, as most tracks are here. The only exception, for me anyway, is ‘Whispering Grass’ which I feel really does not suit Sandy’s style and voice, a minor glitch on a stunning albu (but even this grows on you with time). A star lineup backs as seen above, and the album also features beautiful use of strings. As stated, this one is seldom seen, it has another very delicate cover, like the two previous issues, a non-laminate, always a shame as they more often than not fair badly for wear. This has little actual wear (for a change) but the cream coloured ink appears a little darkened, this not unusual and very prone to doing this. The record itself is in supreme condition, looking hardly even played and sounding magnificent. An impressive copy that will please many collectors.

This Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very High Indeed, seldom seen this devoid of major rubbing and ringwear.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: the front better still and attractive. An unlaminated gatefold format with single thickness card for the front that is embossed. All the text and the framework around the beautiful picture of Sandy as well as some of the flowers. It was made in England by Robor. At the risk of repeating myself, this really is a very delicate and wear-prone sleeve. Dark green ink, embossing, no laminate, the front flap only single card thickness and a very pale buff back all on a gatefold format is not a recipe for longevity and this is rarely seen devoid of significant wear and ageing. To make matters potentially even more precarious, the record is stored via the inside centrefold, near the fold, like The Beatles For Sale, which always puts more stress on the cover, especially the spine and centrefold hinge areas. All lyrics printed inside the gatefold centre. All considered, this is a very fine example.

Cover Front: Very difficult and the best front I have seen on this original cover for some considerable time. The uncompromising green ink and embossed areas are barely worn at all. The lack of rubbing and grubbiness makes this retain really impressive looks. A horizontal crease near the top edge and a mildest hint of a rim impression being critical. Small tip rubs but little else and that gorgeous portrait of Sandy is near reference standard.

Cover Back: The buff coloured ink is a little darkened and naturally aged a fraction, but little detracts from a difficult back. A little mild rim rubbing and traces of light grubbiness, but with any creasing light and little, barely any rubbing or fading, this back will prove hard to find a great deal better. There is a moderate dink to the top right corner however.

Cover Inner Gatefold: This is very nice indeed, slight traces of toning again but not a great deal. The spine fold has a mild crease from the aforementioned corner dink but the entrance for the record inside is unsplit and still strong and neat. The front’s embossing is now seen ‘engraved’ e.g. the reverse of the embossing, so can be clearly seen. All pronounced and sharp, any inside marks or grubbiness are few and light.

Top Edges: Both crisp, straight and neat with minimal traces of any wear.

Bottom Edges: Similar again, any thickening to the front is tiny and faint. Also worthy of note, is the lack of bowing to the single card which makes for a much more attractive finish.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very neat and sharp with barely any hint wear or rubbing. The front right edge with the thin card is superb with no fraying or feathering, practically all the green ink is retained and still looking fantastic. Record entered via the centrefold as stated already – the back right edge is closed. The delicate right front is guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Apart from very minor ‘crinkle’ near the top from the already mentioned twice dink, there is little else to really fault. This style of cover with the thin card spine and central entry, seldom has a neat spine. Still solid, quite thick and straight and folded squarely, both right edges meeting up perfectly together and parallel. Remarkably all the text is fully intact, clear and uneroded, nigh-on perfect infact. Even the ultra delicate spine foldlines show little wear with near full ink retention. Mild compression near the top but largely still erect without need of forcing back into shape. Such ones will only fall flat again anyway. A challenging spine so often worn to shreds, this one impressive overall.

Corners: A moderate dink to the spine top back – this the most significant blemish to the entire cover which should speak volumes for the rest. The rest have little to fault with minimal traces of rubbing and no feathering or softening of the delicate right front pair. Excellent shape is largely retained.

Cover Summary: Not perfect as the grading emphases, but still a very fine example of this incredibly delicate, difficult and uncompromising cover and never easily found this nice. Many collectors will enjoy it but not quite for the very discerning. This one includes it’s plain white unlined inner in excellent unsplit or hardly creased condition.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(-): a superb visual copy with any surface traces minuscule. Ultra clean, shiny, jet black and quite solidly pressed, the best copy I have seen or heard for simply ages. A copy hardly played on all the evidence and well pressed too – something never to be taken for granted. Visually a super record that should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This super record plays up to it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound (never take this for granted on any Sandy Denny title), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a very wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. This is really high fidelity recording and the sound is very impressive – this too being played on very clinical and revealing equipment. Any surface sounds are minimal and practically little was noted at all and this is the very best copy of this record I have ever heard bar none. Quite a delicate recording that rarely has great volume to mask any sound blemishes but this copy hardly needs any. A very clean pressing throughout and no pops or clicks were noted, few copies will match or play much better than this. Both channels are clean and sharp and Sandy’s vocals are crystal clear, sharp and distinctive – the lady herself could have almost been in the room performing – I wish it were possible. This record was beautifully produced by Trevor Lucas and John Wood and the quality is apparent from the very beginning. I feel very sure this record has been played very little and the record itself has been very well looked after. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this sublime record. This copy wull prove very difficult indeed to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

End Piece: This was a pure joy to play-grade, I never tire of hearing any album that features this lady and this is one of the best ever. Losing this wonderful lady at such a young age was purely tragic and she is still sadly missed by all. If, like me, you think Sandy was one of the best UK vocalists ever, you will treasure this fine, and early pressed record. This album and copy is a fine tribute to her memory, play this and dream she is still with us and enjoy it forever.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
