For Satanic Majesties, London MONO Is Where It's At
Conventional wisdom has it that UK Decca pressings of the Rolling Stones' 1960s albums are the best-sounding versions. In the case of Their Satanic Majesties Request, conventional wisdom is wrong. The best-sounding version of Their Satanic Majesties Request is this 1st press London issue.
The reason is because although the Stones recorded the album at Olympic Studios in London, Mick and Keith took the tapes to Bell Sound Studios in New York City to mix and master the album. From group historian Bill Wyman in Rolling With The Stones, pg. 293:
"Tom Keylock went directly from the court to pick up Mick and Keith and take them to London Airport, where they met up with Glyn Johns and Ronnie Schneider. They were off to New York to mix and master our new album."
Furthermore, this album's back cover mentions in the credits:
"engineer, glyn johns at olympic and bell sound"
This 1st pressing London MONO LP was cut from the original master tapes, and you can hear the difference. If you've only heard the STEREO mix, the powerful MONO mix will make you think you're listening to a new and improved album.
Their Satanic Majesties Request was the last Rolling Stones LP on London to have a dedicated MONO mix. As for UK Decca, only the 1st issue LP with 1P/P1 matrices is true MONO. LPs with any other matrices are fold-downs.
CONDITION
DISC: This US very 1st pressing MONO LP with the 1A/1A matrices is visually in EXCELLENT condition. Both sides show full gloss, with only a smattering of hairlines and extremely light surface scratches. Both London labels show no spindle trails.

COVER: This psychedelic cover on thick cardboard is in EXCELLENT- condition. The cover has three minor condition issues: (1) a small hole was punched through, (2) the top seam near the opening on the back gatefold has a 1.5-inch split (3) the back cover has a light LP impression near the bottom. Even with these issues, this cover still looks gorgeous, and the lenticular photo looks untouched.

INNER SLEEVE: The original psychedelic sleeve is in VERY GOOD+ condition, only graded down because of one seam split. Otherwise, it would be in NEAR MINT- condition.
