Speaking of the psychedelically correct, there could hardly be anything more so than a band name like The Smell of Incense-unless it is an album title like All Mimsy Were The Borogoves. A 1993 collection of covers and original material by a Norwegian band of charmingly unabashed hippie orientation, Mimsy sounds rooted in that ephemeral era, circa 1969, when psychedelic held hands with progressive and folk rock, and all got along famously. "Alice," an ode to Lewis Carroll's true love, opens the album, part bouncy British-psych pop and part prog-guitar flight, thus declaring SOL's intent upfront. Further on, you will find further paisley-flavored treats, among them "Fancy," a sitar, tamboura and guitar filled 9-minute version of the Raymond Douglas Davies tune, "(The Smell of) Interstellar Overdrive," a cosmic jam in which interesting things actually happen, and appropriately (what with the communal appearance of the band and their obvious affection for lyrical fantasy rolled in Eastern-tinged melodies), a cover of The Incredible String Band's "Witch's Hat." A lovely album by a lovely band.
I always keep my records in protective vinyl bag and you'll receive that way.
