AFTER A BREAK OF SEVERAL MONTHS FOR HEALTH-RELATED REASONS, I’M BACK TO CONTINUE TO BRING YOU MORE BEATLES AND ROCK & ROLL VINYL AND MEMORABILIA!

As you probably know, PROMOTIONAL RECORDS were ONLY released by record companies to the radio stations and DJs for on-air play or to VIPs in the music industry. They were produced in very small/limited quantities, and they were NOT available to the general public to purchase; therefore, for these reasons, they are valued more by vinyl collectors. Many promotional records are particularly hard-to-find these days and have become highly sought after by vinyl collectors and especially the fans of certain recording artists/bands.

In this auction:

• “AN INTERVIEW WITH MICK JAGGER BY TOM DONAHUE APRIL, 1971” by Tom Donahue and Mick Jagger of the Rolling Stones

• This is Rolling Stones Records 164.

• It is a PROMOTIONAL ALBUM that was issued in 1971.

• This PROMO ISSUE has both sides in STEREO.

• Tom Donahue was the well-known and well-respected DJ in the San Francisco Bay area. He is called the “Father of Progressive Radio”, because he played music from different generations with his own opinions included. As a result, he became very popular with San Francisco listeners.

• Tom Donahue died in 1975 at the age of 46 from a heart attack. It is notable that he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 as a non-performer. He is one of only three disc jockeys to receive that honor.

• The VINYL was issued in a WHITE CARDBOARD COVER with “AN INTERVIEW WITH MICK JAGGER BY TOM DONAHUE APRIL, 1971” printed on the front in small “typewriter-like” print. Below it is the Rolling Stones “Tongue & Lips” logo. The rear of the white cardboard cover is plain.

• The COVER is in STRONG VG CONDITION. The front cover has moderate wear and aging that includes: Information written by a previous owner at the top left corner of the front cover with the following: the LP is a “Collector’s Item”, “Be careful with it”, “Contains Voice of Tom Donahue”, at “KMPX + KSAN San Francisco”; a small sticker stain beside the “tongue and lips” logo; about 5 inches of intermittent cracking and flaking on the bottom seam; a little bit of very light cracking on the top seam; a tiny corner “push”; “balding” on the bottom of the 2 lower corners”. The letter, taped to most of the rear cover, does not permit me to evaluate that side of the cover, though from what I can see, I don’t see anything notable. The spine is fine.

• There is a copy of a LETTER FROM ROLLING STONES RECORDS attached with clear tape to the rear cover. It is also in NICE VG CONDITION with some light smudges on the letter in addition to the pieces of clear tape. This is a “form letter” that was included with this LP when sent to radio stations. (There are several small “pulls” on some corners of the clear tape strips where someone tried to remove the letter. Fortunately, seeing that damage to the letter would likely occur, that effort was stopped.)

• The letter is signed by Marshall Chess. I read online that he left Chess Records in 1970, because he was hired as the founding president of Rolling Stones Records. He became familiar with the band in the mid-1960s when the it had used Chess Studios in Chicago to record songs while touring in the U.S. He helped to create the famous Rolling Stones’ “tongue and lips” logo. Chess also was executive producer on 7 Rolling Stones LPs during the 1970s. He resigned from Rolling Stones Records in 1977.

• There were 2 issues of this promotional LP produced. One had white labels and the other had yellow labels like the LP in this auction.

• The VINYL is on the Weak Side of NEAR MINT (NM) due to a just a few very light/slight surface hairlines/scuffs. “NOT FOR SALE” is printed on both labels.

• But the OUTSTANDING FEATURE is the FORM LETTER from Marshall Chess of ROLLING STONES RECORDS in New York that was sent along with this promotional LP and is taped to the rear cover. (You can read the contents of this letter in one of the images.)

It’s an UNCOMMON PROMOTIONAL RECORD with its ACCOMPANYING ROLLING STONES RECORDS FORM LETTER that will be a nice addition to someone’s vinyl collection!
