Description
An original 1st STEREO press of HITS on UK Decca from XMas1966. Matrix 4/3. Stampers 1I/1B - making it one of the very earliest copies in STEREO. Please note importantly that the labels exhibit a Decca deep groove. Also worth remembering that in 1966 Stereo is the far harder format to source. If your copy doesn't have the deep groove then I'm afraid it is not a 1st pressing. Reissued a squillion times - but true 1st pressings come from Xmas1966 and have a very specific layout. The heavy-set vinyl comes housed in an original MONO gatefold cover with photo pages stapled in. Now, technically that's a format mismatch. But given that the only reference to format is four letters on the spine - this is about as minor a consequence as you could possibly hope for. The most important aspect is that the cover is true to 1st issue. Format indicator should show on the spine ONLY for 1st issue. There should NOT be a peephole on the rear [these are late sixties copies]. Original Decca inner from late 60's
Vinyl (Ex-) In really nice condition despite a moderate level of use. Under close inspection I can make out a good few light marks per side [not heavy though] - so it is not a looker. If you're someone that is gonna freak out at this - I would say perhaps move on to another copy. If you're the sort of buyer that can accept a bit of marking to bag a really nice early copy - this record should still be of significant interest. And the reason is - despite having been played quite a bit it plays pretty clean throughout. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals an, at least, NEAR EXCELLENT level of playback with one deviation. Please be aware that these sixties 'hits' records are usually murdered by this point in time. Take 'Satisfaction' - for instance - this track is usually played to death. But I'm pleased to report that this much abused track is left very well preserved and more than capable of impressing. Then take in those tricky low key numbers like "As Tears Go by" - it plays impressively clean. The only track which experiences issue is Lady Jane - I did pick out a few isolated crackles and a couple of ticks. But barring this one this track [which still plays pretty well] - the rest is pretty impressive. This copy plays back much better than it looks. Highly recommended. A very good value route to a decent playing stereo 1st.
Cover (Vg+) In nice condition with good colour retention on the front. The interior is looking smart with the photo pages still fully intact and attached. One page has 'Switzerland '68' written in bottom left corner. The pages have not been heavily thumbed. All the text is still fully legible on the spine with just a touch of wear down one end. Overall the cover retains really good rigidity.
Inner (Vg) Good but corners snipped.
