redgarnett Store ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This fascinating and exceedingly rare semi-private LP issue – autographed by the artist – pressed by French Philips in assocation with Gravure Universelle (4570, French pressing, black/white label, mono, insert and autographed photo included) features the enigmatic, and lamentably forgotten pianist Eugène Reuchsel in a magnificent all-Liszt recital.
The exact contents are as follows, all works by Franz Liszt:
Fantaisie et fugue sur le nom de B.A.C.H. S.529
Alabieff (arr. Liszt): Le rossignol S.250/1
Funérailles, No. 7 from Harmonies poétiques et réligieuses S.173
Ballade No. 2 in B minor S.171
Les jeux d’eaux à la Villa d’Este, No. 4 from Années de pèlerinage No. 3 S.163
La Campanella, No. 3 from 6 Grandes études de Paganini S. 141
Reuchsel (1900-1988) was a pianist, organist, and composer – indeed, his compositions for organ are quite extensive and are still performaned today. He trained at the Paris Conservatoire and gave more than 5,000 concerts during his lifetime. His commerical recordings are quite few, the most significant being a Chopin / Liszt recital for Philips (A 77404 L, made circa 1950).
His conceptions are large in scope and he brings to them a virtuoso technique and beautiful tone. Hopefully, more Reuchsel recordings or radio broadcasts will emerge.
This particular issue actually involves two autographs – one one the flip side of the jacket (dated 1976) and a second found on the reverse side of a slightly smaller than postcard-like photo enclosed with the album. Also included is a promotional flyer in the form of a concert bill.
The striking cover design was executed by Henry Vincent and the reverse side of the jacket carries a tribute by Maurice David, Inspecteur general en retraite au Ministere de l’Education Nationale – all texts in French only.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor bumping at corners and a bit of creasing, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners' markings, bends, or other defects, and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the insert and autographed photo card are near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Though there is occasional light surface noise, and 4 tics in “La Campanella”, in general playback remains perfectly enjoyable. However, If you must have flawless or NM surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as an excellent collector's copy.
