This auction is for an outstanding and ultra rare Modern Soul record from Ivan R Sturdivant, who I had never really heard of before...but thanks in part to the internet and a website I stumbled across called Paradise of Bachelors..I learned quite a bit which I will share with you now...
This record was recorded in 1980 at the Arthur Smith Studios in Charlotte, North Carolina. Ivan R. Sturdivant is the son of the late gospel singer Cecil R. Sturdivant who was part of the vocal group known as the Bell Jubilee Singers. Back in the 1970s, Ivan started a group called Strategy, which is also the name of the record label that this single before you is pressed on ..."Strategy Records." Ivan's group Strategy had some local success in the Carolinas opening for the likes of Philadelphia's Blue Magic (who are most famous for their Northern Soul XO song "Can I Say That I Love You" which came out on Liberty). Tragically, Ivan's friend and bass player died of a brain aneurysm at the time that a major label (RCA RECORDS) had begun to express interest in signing them.
This record cost Ivan $700.00 to make and the song "The Day the World Died" took 6 months to compose. The flip side, "I really Want to Know" was written in the studio on the spot.
This record is inscribed and autographed "To Debra With All My Love From IRS" Obviously IRS are Ivan R Sturdivant's initials. On the flip side, there is an additional inscription written by a female (likely the uncredited the female vocalist on this record)... it states "to Debra hope you like it."
Embedded within this listing is an auction player, which you may use to judge the sound quality first-hand. There are a few light surface scuffs on either side of this record. I would rate it as slight touch below a VG+ grade overall.
