Bluesologists agree to adjudge that the Herald Sessions were Lightnin' Hopkins' best works. The man wasn't exactly a newcomer in 1954 but, if the "record" (this strange turning thing with a hole in the middle) has already been invented at this time, chances for a Texan negro to have his name on it were very very thin. Like his pairs (Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker), Hopkins had been spending most of his time on the road for the minimum wage. When business man Al Silver offered Hopkins to come to New York to record for Herald, the 40 years old bluesman didn't even have to buy a ticket. The sessions were held in Houston in April of 1954. The electric combo consisted of Lightnin' Hopkins on the "electric" lead guitar, Bassist Donald Cooks, and drummer Ben "Gene" Turner- also, featuring on the two songs on this 45 only, singer Ruth (Blues) Ames- referred to as Hopkins' "Protege"- but was also thought to be his main squeeze at the time. This was her only 10 minutes of fame, as she was never recorded again. However, the Herald catalog lists 4 songs for her that were never released. Overall there were about 40 songs recorded in the two day session. Herald released most of them on 45's over a period of the next 6 years. This promo was released in 1954. Also Herald finally produced an Album from the sessions in 1959, "Lightnin'and the Blues." I think what makes this 45 so special is how Lightnin' and his girlfriend, "Protege", or whatever she was to him, ad-libbed the vocals while they revealed the rules and expectations of their relationship to one another in the songs. All this going on while Lightnin' was crafting out some nice licks on an "electric" guitar. It's raw- It's unrehearsed- It's the Blues!
